A tree does not stop living when it is wounded.

Sometimes, it responds to injury or stress by building layer upon layer of new growth around the vulnerable place—protecting what cannot yet be restored so life can continue.

Humans do this too.

When something is too painful or overwhelming to process, we may place it behind an inner wall. We compartmentalize—not because we are weak, but because some part of us understands that survival must come first.

And then we keep growing.

We build relationships, families, careers and entire lives around the places we have sealed away. From the outside, we may appear strong and capable, while the hidden wound quietly influences where we harden, how we bend and what we fear.

The burl is not evidence that the tree failed.

It reveals where the tree fought to continue living.

Our protective patterns deserve that same compassion. They are not proof that something is wrong with us. They are evidence that something within us worked very hard to carry us forward.

But protection and healing are not the same.

Healing is not tearing open every guarded place or erasing the shape the wound left behind. It is creating enough safety that what was hidden no longer has to remain hidden—and what once stood watch no longer has to stand alone.

Perhaps the question is not:

“Why am I still carrying this?”

Perhaps it is:

“What was this protecting me from—and what would help me feel safe enough to soften now?”

We are not broken by the places where we grew differently.

Sometimes, those places are the clearest evidence that we chose, again and again, to live.
