Being a Mobile Optician and often providing services to our aged population, the most difficult questions I am asked is from patients seeking better vision correction that have advanced age-related medical conditions.
Many times their opthamologist or specialist has advised them that there's really nothing they can do to improve the vision. The best they can hope for is to halt the degenerative condition that is leading to loss of vision or blindness.
Patient : " I have macular degeneration, what kind of glasses will help me see better?"
This is a heartbreaking situation for our elderly patients as there is no real cure for advanced age-related eye disease that can cause reduced vision or blindness.

A retinal implant that partly restores sight in people with a common form of blindness has been approved for use in Europe. This is the first time that such a device – which enables people with a type of severe vision loss to read – has been approved anywhere in the world.
“We’ve had patients who could recognise the face of the Queen and others who’ve drawn the Sydney Opera House through the device,” says Darius Shahida at Science Corporation in Alameda, California, the company behind the implant.
Called the PRIMA implant, the device restores functional central vision – the straight-ahead sight required to see fine details and read – in people with geographic atrophy.
