Stopping unsafe or hurtful behavior matters—but it’s the beginning of parenting, not the conclusion.
“Stop hitting” teaches a child what not to do. It doesn’t teach them how to handle the anger, fear, embarrassment, or hurt that led to it.
When we help kids identify what they feel, they have a better chance of understanding what they truly need. Maybe it’s comfort, space, help, connection, or a better way to solve the problem.
We can hold the boundary and still make room for the emotion:
“It’s okay to be angry. It’s not okay to hit. Let’s figure out what happened and what you can do next time.”
The goal isn’t only better behavior in the moment. It’s helping children grow into adults who can understand their emotions, express them safely, and ask for what they need.
