Today we honor Juneteenth — a celebration of freedom, resilience, culture, and the enduring pursuit of equality. We recognize the strength and contributions of Black communities throughout history and recommit ourselves to creating a future rooted in justice, opportunity, and joy for all.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of slavery—more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. The day marks a pivotal moment in American history and serves as a reminder that freedom and justice have often been delayed, but must never stop moving forward.

This Pride Month, we’re honoring Sherry Harris, a groundbreaking leader whose impact extends far beyond Seattle.

In 1991, Harris became the first openly le***an Black woman elected to public office in the United States when she won a seat on the Seattle City Council. Her election represented a powerful step forward for LGBTQ+ visibility, representation, and equality.

Pride is built on the courage of people who chose to show up authentically and create space for others to do the same. Today, we celebrate Sherry Harris and the countless advocates whose work continues to shape a more inclusive future.
