How do you effectively address shame associated with trauma without amplifying it?

The following is from Dr. Kutnick’s intro video to her upcoming webinar.

As clinicians, we can often tell when a client is feeling shame by:
Averted eyes
Flushing cheeks
Sudden silence
Minimizing what happened
Self-blame (e.g. I should have known better)

Our instinct is often to try to talk them out of it, to offer perspective, to reassure, or to gently challenge the distorted belief. But that rarely works because shame is visceral. It is non-intellectual. It lives in the body as much as in the mind.

When we move too quickly toward an intervention, we can inadvertently signal that shame is itself something to get rid of.

We need to help clients learn how to be with shame in a way that doesn’t amplify what is already unbearable.

National Grief Awareness Day is drawing near on August 30th. Whether or not you specialize in grief counseling, you’re likely to come across a client who is grieving in some way. While we tend to think of grief as the emotions that follow a death, grief can be experienced after any kind of loss. Perhaps a loved one is still physically present, but the relationship is strained in such a way that the emotional support is absent. Clients may be grieving the possibility of what could have been. Grief can be felt after loss of a job, or when shifting to a new phase in life.
