She tried so hard to breastfeed. She thought she failed.
When a mother stops nursing earlier than she planned — when it hurts every single time, when the baby never seems satisfied — sometimes the answer has nothing to do with her.
Sometimes the answer is in her baby's mouth.
Tongue tie (the clinical term is ankyloglossia) is a shortened frenulum — the tiny strip of tissue under the tongue — that limits how freely the tongue can move. And when the tongue can't move freely? The latch suffers. The transfer suffers. The mother suffers. And the guilt? The guilt is enormous.
