How to respond instead of react.
Your child rolls their eyes.
They refuse to listen.
They say something hurtful.
In those moments, it's easy to react.
But often, the most effective parenting happens when we pause before responding.
Try this:
⏸️ Pause.
🧠 Take a breath.
👂 Get curious.
💬 Respond calmly.
Instead of:
"What's wrong with you?"
Try:
"You seem really upset. What's going on?"
Instead of:
"Stop acting like that."
Try:
"Help me understand what's making this so hard right now."
Responding doesn't mean allowing inappropriate behavior.
It means staying regulated enough to address the behavior without escalating the situation.
Children borrow our calm before they learn to create their own.
And sometimes, a pause can change the entire conversation.
