We recently welcomed our newest group of third-year medical students from the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine (ACOM) and the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) to Helen Keller Hospital.

Throughout their clinical rotations, the students will work alongside our physicians and care teams, gaining hands-on experience in a hospital setting while continuing to build the knowledge, skills and confidence that will shape their future careers as physicians.

We are proud to play a role in their medical education and excited to welcome them to our hospital family and community! 💚

Education never stops in the Emergency Department. 🩺

Yesterday’s ER 101 training gave our nurses the opportunity to build their emergency response skills through hands-on practice with the Level 1 Rapid Infuser.

The system is used during massive transfusion protocols to deliver warmed blood products and fluids at rates of up to 750mL per minute. This rapid support can be critical when treating patients experiencing severe blood loss.

Regular hands-on training helps our nurses maintain familiarity with the equipment and stay ready to respond when every second counts. We are proud of their continued commitment to learning, preparation and high-quality patient care. 💚👏

Brittany’s nomination reflects the compassion and initiative she brings to every patient interaction. When an unforeseen barrier placed a patient’s much-needed procedure at risk of being delayed, Brittany stepped in, worked through the situation and helped ensure the patient’s care could move forward as planned.

Later that same day, she found a thoughtful way to help another patient feel more at ease before her procedure. She was also working an extra shift to support her coworkers.

Whether she is making phone calls, solving problems or finding small ways to provide comfort, Brittany consistently does more than what is required. She recognizes what her patients, their families and her coworkers need and steps in without hesitation.

Preparing to respond when every second matters. 🌡️☀️

Yesterday, Dr. Joe McIlwain, Helen Keller Hospital ER Physician and Medical Director of Keller EMS, led a hands-on training class focused on recognizing and managing heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses in high school athletes.

Local fire chiefs, athletic trainers, EMTs and paramedics participated in the training, which included practical instruction on assessing athletes, beginning treatment in the field and coordinating the next steps in care. Dr. McIlwain also shared insight into the challenges first responders and athletic staff may encounter when caring for an athlete experiencing a heat-related emergency.

We appreciate everyone who took part in this important training and their continued commitment to protecting student-athletes throughout our community.

Our Sports Medicine & Rehab Services team was proud to sponsor and participate in the 2026 High School Football in the South Media Days this week, connecting with players and coaches from across North Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi.

We especially enjoyed visiting with the schools and teams we serve, including Colbert Heights, Colbert County, Sheffield and Deshler. We’re proud to support these student-athletes throughout the year and wish all participating teams a safe and successful season! 🏈💚

Please join us in welcoming Ryder Costa, D.O., to our Hospitalist team! 💚🩺

Dr. Costa’s connection to Helen Keller Hospital began during his medical training, when he worked alongside our physicians and cared for patients as a medical student. After completing his residency, he chose to return as a full-time physician.

Originally from California, Dr. Costa earned his bachelor’s degree in Biological Science from Florida Atlantic University before attending the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine in Dothan.

As a hospitalist, Dr. Costa will care for patients throughout their inpatient stay, collaborating with nurses, specialists and other members of the care team.

We are proud that Dr. Costa chose to return to Helen Keller Hospital for the next chapter of his career and are excited to welcome him to our medical staff!

Jeremy brings more than 25 years of health care experience and a leadership background rooted in hospital operations, service growth and community-based care.
