🥗 The secret weapon at any BBQ? A big, fresh salad.

Here’s the biology of it — when you eat fiber-rich vegetables, they feed the beneficial bacteria in your gut called the microbiome. Those bacteria produce short-chain fatty acids that reduce inflammation, stabilize your blood sugar, and keep your energy steady all afternoon. No 3pm crash. No feeling like you need to lie down after the burger.

Heavy BBQ food without any fiber slows gastric motility — basically, things stop moving the way they should and you feel sluggish for hours.

A salad fixes that. Not by replacing the good stuff, but by making your whole plate work better.

This weekend we’re grabbing our greens from . Throw in some early radishes, fresh herbs, a simple lemon and olive oil dressing and you’ve got something that’s genuinely good and genuinely delicious.

Eat the burger. Have the salad too. Your gut bacteria will be throwing their own little party. 🌿🇺🇸

Cabbage doesn’t get nearly enough credit. This affordable, everyday vegetable is quietly one of the most nutrient-dense foods you can eat — and here’s why it deserves a place on your plate.

Nutritious and low-calorie. One cup of raw cabbage has just 22 calories, yet delivers a strong hit of vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, and potassium.

Great for your gut. High in fiber and — when fermented into sauerkraut or kimchi — rich in probiotics, cabbage keeps your digestive system happy and your microbiome thriving.

Fights inflammation. Red cabbage is packed with antioxidants like anthocyanins that help reduce chronic inflammation, which is linked to heart disease and certain cancers.

Easy on the wallet. A single head of cabbage is cheap, lasts all week, and works roasted, raw, in soups, or fermented.

Don’t overlook the humble cabbage — it’s one of the simplest upgrades you can make to your diet and can be found at most farmer’s markets in Vermont! 🥬

Do you struggle eating dairy and can’t get behind dairy alternatives? Give goat milk a try! Goat milk has smaller fat globules, softer curd formation, and lower levels of A1 casein protein which can sometimes lead to gut inflammation. This combination often leads to a product that is more easily digested by our gut. Bonus if you get goat milk supplied by local goats!
