Arles and Lloyd Winter, residents at Sanford Sheldon Care Center, recently celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary. Reflecting on their years together, Lloyd said marriage hasn’t always been easy, but it has always been worth it.

“It’s not always smooth,” he said. “You’ve got to make up before you go to sleep every night if something happens. And it’s not a 50/50 split, either. You’ve got to give it 100 percent.”

Josefine Combs, Psy.D., is a Sanford Health neuropsychologist who helps athletes with the mental side of competing. After Rick Anderson received a TAVR procedure, a surgery meant to replace a valve in his heart, his Sanford Health care team instructed him to follow a cardiac rehab program. He highly attributes that to his successful recovery.

Not everyone attends all of their rehab sessions, but doing so "gives them the encouragement that they're able to exercise on their own when they're done here," says Allison Mildenberger, RN.

Congratulations to Jessica Postma, RN and Sally McMahon, CNP for being awarded a team DAISY Award submitted by a patient and his girlfriend.

The nomination commends Jessica Postma, RN for her kindness. She took extra time to explain things. The nominator wrote, "I can't thank her enough for her being our nurse tonight. He doesn't like doctors or hospitals and it was great seeing the twinkle in his eye and the excitement of a child cove over him for being treated so kindly and for having someone really listen to him."

The nomination for Sally McMahon, CNP, included this note: "Sally genuinely took the time to treat him as the beautiful lots of feelings human that is. . . Thank you for caring and being you! Stay pretty and being KIND!"

The DAISY Foundation was established by members of the family of Patrick Barnes. He was 33 years old and died of complications of an auto-immune disease. The family came up with DAISY – an acronym for Diseases Attaching the Immune System. During Patrick's 8 week illness, he received extraordinary care and his family was very impressed by the clinical care his nurses provided along with the compassion and kindness they brought to his bedside day in and day out. Thus, they created the DAISY Award.
