Two legs. Two kinds of pain. One is a vein problem, and one is an artery problem.

Leg A: The ache starts the moment you begin walking and fades within minutes of resting.

Leg B: The ache builds all day and eases when you prop your legs up.

Which is which? Make your guess in the comments.

CVR's Dr. Ali's guide has the answer, plus three other causes of leg pain worth understanding.

When MarketWatch asked why blood clots strike even elite athletes like Eagles QB Jalen Hurts, it turned to Dr. Eddie Fernandez, a CVR vein expert in North Bethesda/Rockville and Silver Spring, Maryland.

Hurts’ stacked two risks: a cleat to the calf, then a flight to London. Dr. Fernandez isn’t involved in his care, but his message applies to anyone who travels, sits for long stretches, or has varicose veins. They aren’t just cosmetic. In a study of 425,000+ adults, people with varicose veins were about five times more likely to develop DVT.

Read the full blog to learn what Dr. Fernandez says about blood clots, travel, and vein health.

On a blood thinner? You may have been told your varicose veins can’t be treated.

So you wait, living with heavy, aching legs because a medication seems to have closed the door. But the research says otherwise: a registry of more than 33,000 vein procedures found staying on anticoagulation didn’t raise complication risk, even for patients with a history of DVT.

Never stop a blood thinner on your own. That decision belongs to your prescribing doctor and your vein specialist, together.

CVR’s Dr. Ali explains how vein treatment works when you’re on a blood thinner, and the importance of discussing this with your vein specialist.

Stop apologizing to your vein doctor.

Most patients lead with an excuse: their job, their weight, the workout they skipped. But the real answer isn't personal. It's often genetic.

Family history is the single strongest predictor of varicose veins. Most of what raised your risk was decided before you had any say in it.

Your shoes may be doing something you didn’t expect.

Common advice is that heels are hard on your legs and flats are safe. Researchers tested it by measuring how much blood the calf muscle pump could push back toward the heart in four setups: barefoot, low heel, stiletto, and platform.

Taller heels did move less blood. But one shoe performed worse than a stiletto of the same height, and the reason has nothing to do with the heel.

Read the full blog, medically reviewed by CVR's Dr. Nagamoto, to find out which shoe it was. 👠

𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗪𝗶𝘀𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝗪𝗲𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆!

Consider this: varicose veins follow a script, and most people only read the first page.

First come the bulging, rope-like cords. Then the aching and heaviness. Then, if they’re left alone, the skin starts to change, and that’s the hardest stage to reverse.

That bulge isn’t a surface problem. It’s the first visible sign of pressure that’s been building deeper in your leg for years.

The good news about a predictable sequence is that it can be interrupted at any point, and the earlier you step in, the less there is to undo.

CVR's Dr. Laverdiere walks through each stage and what stops it 👉 https://bit.ly/4emlH9q

“𝗜 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.”

A year ago, Lauren’s legs started aching and swelling during workouts, daily walks, and everyday life, with no trigger to explain it. Venous insufficiency runs in her family, so after some research and an exam at CVR, the diagnosis made sense. Addressing it early was the plan.

Fast forward to today: a three-day concert spent standing all day. No breaks to sit down. No swelling, achiness, or tingling.

Hear her story in her own words. 🎶
