WEIGHT LOSS SHOULDN’T COST YOU YOUR STRENGTH.

After five months of using a GLP-1 medication, Ed had lost a significant amount of muscle throughout his legs, upper back, chest and core.

He was also experiencing problems with his balance, posture and overall physical capability.

His brother, who had already experienced tremendous results working with Matthew, recommended that Ed come to BC Fitness.

For the past nine months, Ed has trained with Matthew twice a week. Matthew developed an individualized program focused on rebuilding the specific muscle groups responsible for Ed’s strength, balance and posture while adjusting the challenge to meet him where he was.

In Ed’s words:

“I have made significant progress under Matthew’s training program.”

Matthew brought the knowledge and guidance. Ed brought the consistency and willingness to keep doing the work.

Together, they are rebuilding more than muscle. They are rebuilding strength, confidence and capability.

This is why preserving muscle must be part of every successful weight-loss plan—especially during significant or rapid weight loss.

🦴 FIT TIP #91: A WEIGHTED VEST ISN’T A BONE-DENSITY CHEAT CODE

Weighted vests are suddenly everywhere especially among women concerned about osteoporosis and bone loss.

The pitch sounds logical:

➕ Add weight to your walk.
🦴 Increase the load on your bones.
💪 Build stronger bones.

But does simply walking around heavier create enough of the right stimulus to meaningfully improve bone density?

And what happens when that added load exceeds your current capacity?

Weighted vests aren’t bad.

⚖️ Adding load can be useful but only when the body is prepared to manage it.

A weighted vest can increase the challenge of walking, stairs, step-ups, squats or carries. But it isn’t automatically superior to progressive strength training and it doesn’t magically turn a walk into a complete bone-building program.

If someone already has osteoporosis, spinal changes, balance limitations, hip or knee pain, or poor walking mechanics, randomly adding 10–20 pounds may load more than just the bones they hoped to strengthen.

The goal isn’t simply to add weight.

It’s to apply the right amount of load through movements your body can safely control and progressively build from there.

🦴 FIT TIP: Don’t wear weight just because TikTok told you it builds bones. Choose a load, movement and progression your body can actually manage.

🤔 Have you purchased, or considered purchasing, a weighted vest for bone health?

🏋️ The BC Fitness team is trained to work with individuals living with osteopenia and osteoporosis. We can help you build a strength program that considers your diagnosis, current capacity, balance, movement quality and goals.

✅ Before you simply add weight, let’s make sure it’s the right weight, and the right strategy, for you.

🏳️‍🌈💪 ON PRIDE DAY, WE FLEX.

And Poulsbo definitely came ready to flex yesterday. 😂

We had an absolute blast at Poulsbo Pride watching friends, community leaders, familiar faces, and plenty of new ones stop by the BC Fitness booth to Show Their Strength.

Some brought the 💪.

Some brought the poses.

And some were just REALLY committed to getting their head through that hole. 😂

But that's kind of the point.

At BC Fitness, strength has never looked just one way and neither does our community.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, said hello, took a picture, shared a laugh, and helped make the day such a great one.

Exclusive Space. Inclusive Environment.

Stronger Together. Proud Forever. 🏳️‍🌈💪

THIS IS WHAT GREAT COACHING LOOKS LIKE 💪

We recently received an incredible Google review from Cara about her experience working with BC Fitness' own, Mike Leslie.

Cara came to BC Fitness from one of our trusted provider partners...frozen shoulder pain and limited mobility had left her feeling like her body could no longer do what her mind wanted it to do.

Mike started with what she COULD do.

The rule was simple: If something hurts, we find a different movement. We don’t force it, and we don’t give up on the person.

Over the next few months, Cara’s strength and mobility improved, her nighttime pain eased, and she began setting personal records...with no pain during her workouts.

Mike also made sure she learned proper movement, technique and recovery so she could eventually train confidently on her own.

In Cara’s words:

“I am confident that I can do anything I put my mind to again!”

That is the goal, not simply getting someone through a workout, but helping them feel capable in their own body again.

Cara, you put in the work and earned every bit of this progress.

Mike, this is what great coaching looks like.

💜 Our walk team just got a little stronger!

We're excited to add another walker to Team Stronger Together – BC Fitness for this year's Walk to End Alzheimer's on October 10th.

A huge thank you to Amber Dawn for signing up to walk with us this October. Amber is a BC Fitness member, which also explains why I apparently thought dropping into an 18-inch squat for this photo was a reasonable idea. 😂

Seriously, Amber...thank you for stepping up and supporting a cause that means so much to so many families in our community. We're excited to have you walking with us! 💜

And remember: you do NOT need to be a BC Fitness member to join our team. If you'd like to walk with us, we'd love to have you.

FIT TIP #90: YOUR WEARABLE ISN’T A REPORT CARD

Wearable technology was identified as the #1 fitness trend for 2026 by the American College of Sports Medicine.

Nearly half of American adults now own a smartwatch or fitness tracker.

We’re collecting more health data than ever but are we actually learning anything from it?

Sleep, recovery, steps, calories, heart rate, strain and stress are all just numbers until we understand what influences them and use that information to make a decision.

For example, we’re repeatedly told that looking at a screen before bed will destroy our sleep.

But my WHOOP data can’t seem to distinguish between:

💻 Working on my computer
📖 Reading a book
🧦 Playing the world’s least exciting matching game with my socks

My sleep and recovery look remarkably similar.

But alcohol? The data notices.

Processed food? The data notices.

A large amount of sugar shortly before bed? Oh, the data definitely notices.

Does that prove blue light doesn’t affect sleep? No.

It means generic health advice is a starting point, not a personalized conclusion.

Change one variable. Watch what happens over several weeks instead of one night. Look for patterns and use what you learn to make better decisions.

Your wearable isn’t there to congratulate you for earning a green score or make you feel like a failure when it turns red.

It’s there to help answer a more useful question:

What actually moves the needle for me?

⌚ FIT TIP: Don’t just collect your data. Interrogate it.

BC Fitness has its own WHOOP group where we look beyond the daily score and learn how sleep, nutrition, exercise and recovery affect us individually.

Already using WHOOP? Ask us how to join.

Curious about wearable technology? Ask us how we use it.

What has your wearable taught you?
