While all hormones prescribed to patients have to be synthesized, the chemical structure of bioidentical (body identical) and synthetic hormones is different. Estradiol (oral or transdermal) is bioidentical, whereas birth control pills and many other hormones are synthetic and not the same as what our bodies naturally make. Both can be good options depending on the patient and their needs!

We have both spent our careers taking care of women and pursuing extra education. This year we added a few extra letters to our credentials (MSCP, or Menopause Society Certified Practitioner)! While it is not a requirement to care for patients in perimenopause or menopause, hopefully it demonstrates our commitment to evidence-based and up to date care!

Hot flashes can be a sign of blood vessel dysfunction and are not something to just “tough out”. Talk to your doctor about treatments that might be right for you!

Those of us who prescribe testosterone for women see day in and day out how it is so much more than a libido drug. Improvement in mood, energy, brain fog, sexual function and many more. When monitored appropriately side effects are very minor and we do NOT see women becoming masculine. There are 80 years of published data on its use in women and personal and clinical experience to boot. “Normal” lab values (created based on no science…) are not the same as optimal. And that is different for everyone! Find yourself a doctor who understands personalized medicine and nuances and is able to help you feel your best. Maybe testosterone is a part of that plan, and maybe not! You get to decide.

It’s incredibly frustrating when studies do not separate out various forms of hormones and make blanket statements about “HRT” as being bad or good. There is SO much nuance and dose, route and formulation matter!!

Without an FDA approved testosterone product for women, we are left dosing male products to female appropriate amounts. A blob, a pea, a dime, a nickel, etc. Some women prefer using a resealable syringe. Whatever your method is, it is far less than male doses and is designed to fit your physiologic needs. Hopefully better products for women are coming soon. In the meantime, we will make do with our methods and dream of that ring 💍 Taylor Swift
