Many families hear these two terms and wonder, “Aren’t they the same thing?”
While both focus on comfort, symptom management, and improving quality of life, there are important differences. Understanding your options can help you make informed decisions for yourself or someone you love.
🩵 PALLIATIVE CARE: Support at Any Stage
Palliative care provides an extra layer of support for individuals living with serious illnesses.
✔️ Can begin at any stage of a serious illness.
✔️ Can be provided alongside treatments intended to cure or control the disease.
✔️ Helps manage pain, symptoms, stress, and emotional needs.
✔️ Supports patients and families with difficult healthcare decisions.
💛 HOSPICE CARE: Comfort When the Focus Shifts
Hospice care is designed for individuals with a terminal illness when the focus shifts from curing the illness to maximizing comfort and quality of life.
✔️ Generally appropriate when a physician determines life expectancy is six months or less if the illness follows its usual course.
✔️ Focuses on comfort, dignity, and symptom management rather than curing the terminal illness.
✔️ Provides an interdisciplinary team that may include nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers.
✔️ Offers emotional, spiritual, and bereavement support for families.
✔️ Can be provided wherever the patient calls home.

Have you noticed changes in your loved one’s health but aren't sure what to do next?
Sometimes, the signs are subtle. Other times, they're impossible to ignore. Recognizing these changes early can help families explore options for additional comfort and support.
Here are 5 signs it may be time to start the conversation:
🏥 1. Frequent Hospitalizations or ER Visits – Repeated hospital stays or emergency visits due to worsening health.
📉 2. Declining Health & Increased Symptoms – Symptoms continue to worsen despite treatment.
🍽️ 3. Unintentional Weight Loss or Decreased Appetite – Noticeable weight loss or reduced interest in eating.
😴 4. Sleeping More & Less Energy – Spending more time in bed and experiencing increased fatigue.
🚶 5. Difficulty with Daily Activities – Needing more assistance with bathing, dressing, walking, or everyday tasks.
These changes don't automatically mean someone qualifies for hospice, but they may signal that it's time to explore additional care options.
