If you were near Shore Medical Center Monday evening, you may have wondered why more than a dozen people outside our ER were being sprayed with water by firefighters, wrapped in towels and escorted into the hospital.

It was all part of a carefully planned emergency preparedness drill, giving Shore and our local first responders the chance to practice how we would work together if multiple patients exposed to hazardous materials suddenly needed our help.

The full-scale exercise brought together Shore, Somers Point Fire, Police and Emergency Management, EMS and the Atlantic County Office of Emergency Management/HazMat to test everything from patient decontamination and hospital safety to quickly determining who needed care first.

In a real emergency, there’s no time to figure out who does what. That’s why we train. 💜🚒🚑

A big thank you to the Somers Point Apartments team for inviting Shore Medical Center to be part of their Back to School Bash on Friday! We loved spending the afternoon with local kids and families as they got ready for the new school year. 💜🎒

At our Shore tent, third-year Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine medical student MJ was a big hit with the kids, using a prize wheel and fun activities to get them talking about healthy habits, preventing the spread of germs and helpful items to keep handy in their backpacks. We’re so grateful for MJ’s enthusiasm, creativity and passion for connecting with the community. One young guest even gave him a balloon animal - a pretty good sign he made a great impression!

Of course, our friendly ambassador Fin the Dolphin joined the fun too, meeting kids and giving hugs.🐬 Shore ER Director Sherri was also on hand providing first aid alongside our community partners Danielle and Paul from Egg Harbor Township Emergency Medical Services.

From backpacks and school supplies to a barbecue and ice cream, Somers Point Apartments put together a wonderful afternoon for their residents. We were thrilled to be part of it and look forward to more opportunities to connect with our Somers Point neighbors!

Thank you to Alanna Stoloff and Shore Local Newsmagazine for this wonderful feature on our own Sherri Richmond, MSN, RN, Administrative Director of Emergency, Pediatrics and Respiratory, and the work she’s leading at Shore.

We talk a lot about our sensory-friendly programs, but behind so much of that work is Sherri. She has a remarkable ability to listen to patients and families, our frontline team and our community partners, and turns what she hears into real, practical ways to make healthcare more comfortable and welcoming.

That approach has helped shape Shore’s sensory-friendly initiatives, from resources in our Emergency Department to outpatient lab testing and partnerships throughout our community - especially the partnership she has built with Atlantic County Special Services School District. It’s a reflection of the kind of leader Sherri is: someone who listens, cares deeply and is always looking for ways we can better serve the people who count on us.

We’re very proud to have Sherri on our team and grateful to Alanna for sharing this story so thoughtfully. 💜

Meet Taylor L. and Michael G., two third-year medical students from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine who are completing their clinical rotations at Shore. They are part of our fourth class since our PCOM partnership began, and they'll be rotating through 10 different specialties for hands-on training across a wide range of medical fields. Right now, Michael is on his OB rotation and Taylor is on neurosurgery!

This past Thursday, they brought their knowledge and training to the Ocean City Senior Center for a talk on the weird things that can happen to our bodies as we age - from losing height to bruising more easily to digestion changes. The crowd loved them!

Our physicians and staff love our PCOM students, too. Teaching the next generation of doctors is a rewarding part of their role, helping to shape future physicians as they apply classroom knowledge to real patient care. Beyond the clinical skills, students like Taylor and Michael get to experience Shore's culture of caring firsthand, which also helps shape the kind of doctors they'll become.

We thank Taylor and Michael for being so eager to help with opportunities like this and for sharing their knowledge with our Ocean City neighbors!

If you follow Bob Kelly - Kelly's Kidz, then you know he’s been very busy this summer hosting events at the shore and asking people to remember to bring a toy for hospitalized children. We’re honored to be a recipient of this generosity, and wanted to share what several months of toy collecting looks like! We are so grateful for this support and for the care every donor has shown the children and families we serve.

For us, this collection represents so much more than toys. Each one is an opportunity to comfort a frightened child, ease anxiety, provide a welcome distraction, and bring a smile during what can be an upsetting time.

Creating a positive, comforting experience for every child and family is part of who we are, and donations like this help make those moments possible. At Shore, we treat an estimated 11,000 pediatric patients each year and these toys will go a long way in helping them have a positive experience.

What does it really feel like to work in healthcare? Twenty local high school students got the chance to find out during Shore Medical Center’s Next Gen Mini Med School this summer!

From responding to a simulated cardiac arrest and touring an ambulance to reading X-rays, taking blood pressures and learning directly from physicians, nurses, first responders and other healthcare professionals, students spent five days getting an inside look at the many people and careers behind exceptional patient care.

With 50 students applying for just 20 spots, the enthusiasm for this year’s program was incredible - and so was watching these future healthcare professionals jump in, ask questions and try new skills.

We’re proud to give young people in our community opportunities to explore their interests, learn from Shore’s healthcare professionals and perhaps discover the career that will someday bring them back through our doors as peers!

Meet Reed, the first patient welcomed through Shore Medical Center’s new sensory-friendly radiology program!

Eight-year-old Reed lives in Upper Township, is heading into third grade, plays football and is a HUGE Philadelphia Eagles fan. His family moved here from Georgia in 2021 to be near the beach, which his mom, Kathryn, says helps her kids feel calm and regulated. Since then, she’s also come to lean on Shore when her family needs care close to home.

Last week, Reed had a breathing episode during football and his inhaler wasn’t providing the relief he needed. After a visit to urgent care, Reed and Kathryn made a two-hour trip the next day to see his pediatric pulmonologist. His doctor needed a chest X-ray and viral swab before determining next steps, but the tests couldn’t be done that day.

Rather than make another long trip, Kathryn called Shore.

Our ER, Pediatrics and Radiology teams worked together to get Reed the testing he needed, with some extra support to help him feel comfortable. A visual projector and other sensory-friendly tools helped during his chest X-ray, while a squishy caterpillar toy kept his hands busy during his viral swab.

“For children who need a little extra support during medical care, small changes can have a big impact on their experience,” said Sherri Richmond, MSN, RN, who leads the ER and sensory-friendly care at Shore. “Our goal is to understand what each child needs to feel safe and comfortable and meet them there.”

“This is the second time Shore has bailed us out for the same situation,” Kathryn said. “The first time, they put Eagles game replays on the TV for him! Being able to go to Shore for these tests makes it easier on him and me.”

In fact, on the way to see his specialist, Reed told his mom, “I want to go to the other place!” He meant Shore 🥰

And Reed summed up why: “We don’t have to sit in the car for five hours!”

Shore’s sensory-friendly programs are made possible through the generosity of Mike and Jeannie Monichetti, the Eagles Autism Foundation and other generous donors helping us make healthcare more comfortable for children like Reed.

We’re glad this beach-loving, football-playing Eagles fan has “the other place” close to home when he needs us. 🦅💜

What a wonderful evening connecting with our community at Somers Point's National Night Out! 💜

Our favorite dolphin, Fin 🐬, had a great time shaking fins, posing for photos, and visiting with families as well as our local first responders, including the Somers Point Police Department (Official).

At our Shore Medical Center table, students from the Shore School of Radiologic Technology shared their passion for their work by teaching children about bones and the human body. Kids enjoyed exploring a spine model, checking out skeletons, and taking home bone-themed coloring activities.

We were also happy to share information about Shore's Sensory-Friendly programs, helping families learn about the resources we offer to make healthcare more comfortable and accessible for patients with sensory sensitivities.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello, learn something new, and spend the evening with us. We loved being part of another great National Night Out and look forward to seeing you again next year!
