Thank you to everyone who came out to Open Farms today to pick up their Erie County Emergency Preparedness Bags!

All of the bags are now spoken for, and we’re grateful to have had the opportunity to help get these preparedness supplies into the hands of members of our community.

We love being able to partner on initiatives like this that connect our neighbors with useful resources and support a safer, more prepared community. Thank you to Erie County for providing the bags, and to everyone who participated! 💚

We can all feel the season changing, and it reminds us that having an emergency kit in your household is an important step to being prepared for anything that comes your way, from a simple power outage to a massive winter storm.

Open Farms has 21 Emergency Preparedness Bags available to distribute, thanks to Erie County, in recognition of September Preparedness Month!

These are sturdy bags that contain tools and supplies to help keep you and your household safe, including device-charging backup, emergency food ration, lantern, water filtration straw and more.

We want to make sure these bags reach 20 local households without requiring anyone to race to the farm, so we’ll be using a simple registration form to sign up.

Registration will open Thursday at 12:00 PM on the Open Farms website: openfarmswny.org

The first 20 households to complete the form will be registered to pick a bag. (One bag per household, please.)

Bags will be available for pickup during Open Farms open hours, 9-12 on Sunday, September 27th. Any unclaimed bags will be handed out on a first come, first serve basis at the farm at 7512 Genesee Rd, Springville.

Huge thanks to Erie County for allowing us to reach our local community with these free resources!

Yesterday’s Goat Gathering was truly beautiful. 🐐❤️

Thank you to everyone who helped us create a day for community... and to all of you who came, supported us, and shared an absolutely gorgeous day just being together.

We loved seeing many of our dedicated co-farmers and longtime supporters, and welcoming so many new faces.

We’re especially grateful for our wonderful Board and all the effort, care, and support they poured into making this gathering happen. We are so glad that many of you had the chance to meet them! Special thanks to the Hitching Post- everyone loved the ice cream! And the day wouldn't be complete without the very best music for our day from Phil and Jean Dickson from City Fiddle, and solo artist, Jane Hereth. 🎶

There is much more to share, but for today, please enjoy this sweet glimpse of a really special day. 🐐🙏🏻🌻❤️

🐐🌻 🍁NEXT WEEK, WE GATHER! 🍁🌻🐐

Open Farms is built around a fundamental belief: people of all abilities deserve an accessible place in farming not only as visitors, but as trusted contributors and co-farmers. This is Care Farming!

Our rescued animals all needed a safe place, and now they help enrich and share that space with people who need the same. Children and adults of all abilities come to Open Farms to take part in hands-on farm life as co-farmers. Think animal sanctuary, regenerative agriculture, education, and community belonging, all growing together as we tend this space.

We have witnessed what happens when people are invited into meaningful connection with animals, land, work, and one another. Confidence grows as we as discover how much our contributions matter. Relationships build as we learn and support one another.

Next week’s Goat Gathering is our invitation for the wider community to embrace their inner farmer and fall in love with this mission just as we have. 🐐❤️

This year, we deliberately traded the formality and expense of a gala for something that offers a more farm-aligned experience: a relaxed, joyful afternoon with goats and other farm friends, great local food and music, nature-based activities for all ages, raffles, prizes, farm merch, and real community.

Tomorrow begins our seven-day countdown, and we are SO excited to share more in depth about this work and why it matters! Tonight, we begin with the most direct invitation you can get:

Come join us! Grab your tickets, bring your family and friends, meet the animals and the mission. Help us sustain the farm where everyone belongs.

Caring for animals through extreme cold and deep snow is a real lesson in humility. You can prepare, reinforce shelters, haul water through ice, layer bedding until your body aches...and still feel the quiet helplessness of knowing that, in the end, nature sets the terms.

This kind of cold brings worry, exposure, exhaustion, and the persistent question every farmer carries into the night: "Did I do enough?"

Last week, we focused on the things within our control, stacking layers of donated Christmas trees around the pig hut to form a “Pigloo” once the snow came, adding deep straw for all of the animals, filling cracks, hanging tarps and blankets, and testing ventilation again and again to strike that fragile balance between warmth and moisture escape. A fire-safe seed-warming mat helped keep baby Fern and her mom Fiona warm, while the rest of our goats followed their instinct to curl up close, nesting into straw, conserving heat together.

We are grateful to report that Mr. Pig and Miss Piggy popped out at morning chores with tails wagging, seemingly unfazed by –16° temperatures. The donkeys, Wayne and Diesel, have grown thick coats, and are having their strongest winter yet without the need for blankets. The chickens are grumpy but did great, and even gave us sine beautiful eggs! (We did bring our teeny tiny bantam chicken, princess Kaia, inside due to her history of frostbite- she came to us after being found in the snow last year.) And finally of our goats, with so many different needs and challenges, also made it safely through the coldest temps we have experienced on this farm yet!

This kind of survival and care doesn't happen alone. Open Farms is sustained by our co-farmers and Board of Directors who show up in all seasons...who shovel paths before chores, make steady improvements to pens, stalls, doors, and walkways, and step in and hold down the farm without hesitation when someone is sick or stretched thin. This is why care farming matters: because showing up consistently, especially when conditions are hard, not only protects lives- it brings us together through the work, and makes room for both animals and people to care for one another. ❤️

As the next storm and continued cold approach, we will remain vigilant! Thank you for the calls and messages- we hope this update offers you some relief! We will try to post more regular stories and updates to keep you informed. (And we will keep working to open our driveway and lot as much as possible...exciting uodates coming this year!)

Most of all, we are deeply grateful... to each and every co-farmer, to those who hauled and donated Christmas trees, who donate treats and hay, those who come to share Soup-er Sundays and open hours, and all of you who offer warmth in all its many forms! 🙏🏻

P.S. Hey, Mother Nature, it would be really nice if the "red dot" indicating the worst of the snowy weather this winter could stop hovering over our hill...😬
