Your brain is one of the most energy-demanding organs in your body.

Even though it makes up only a small percentage of your body weight, your brain uses an enormous amount of your body's energy every day.

That energy powers everything from memory and concentration to emotions, decision-making, and mood.

When we talk about "brain energy," we're talking about how brain cells produce and use the energy they need to function.

Researchers are continuing to explore how changes in metabolism may influence this process and what that could mean for mental health.

Why is the conversation around metabolic psychiatry growing?

Medicine has long recognized that the brain and body are deeply connected.

Despite this, mental health care has often been separated from other areas of medicine, even though many biological systems influence how the brain functions.

Metabolic psychiatry aims to further explore these connections.

Dr. Sethi is a leading researcher on how factors like energy metabolism, nutrition, inflammation, and other aspects of metabolic health contribute to brain function and mental health.

Our goal at Metabolic Psychiatry Labs is to expand our understanding of mental illness by looking beyond symptoms and considering how both brain health and metabolic health can impact overall mental well-being.

As research continues to evolve, so does the opportunity for greater collaboration across disciplines. We're excited to help make this growing field more accessible through education and conversation.

For decades, mental health has largely been viewed through the lens of the brain.

But the brain depends on the rest of the body throughout every second of every day, and it needs a constant supply of oxygen, nutrients, and energy, plus the right metabolic environment to function at its best.

When those systems get disrupted, brain function can be affected too.

This doesn't mean that every mental health condition has the same cause or that metabolic health explains every issue.

But it does raise an important question: What if understanding metabolic health could help us better understand mental health?

That question is at the heart of metabolic psychiatry.

What exactly is metabolic psychiatry?

It's a question we're hearing more and more, and one we'll be discussing here often.

Metabolic psychiatry is an emerging field of medicine that studies the relationship between metabolic health and brain health.

Metabolic Psychiatry Labs investigates how the body's energy systems and other metabolic processes may influence mental health and psychiatric conditions.

The field brings together insights from psychiatry, neuroscience, endocrinology, nutrition, and other medical specialties to better understand the connections between the brain and the rest of the body.

Over the coming weeks, we'll break down these ideas into clear, practical conversations that are easy to follow, whether you're a patient, caregiver, clinician, researcher, or are simply curious to learn more.
