Hydration and how it affects muscle tension

Muscle cramps are most common in the calves and can last anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes. Even after the cramp goes away, the area may still feel sore for hours or even days.

One common cause of cramping is dehydration and loss of electrolytes. Your muscles need proper hydration to work efficiently—especially during physical activity.

To help prevent cramps:
✔️ Drink plenty of fluids every day
✔️ Stay hydrated during exercise
✔️ Gently stretch before and after using your muscles
You can also help restore electrolytes by including:
✔️ Low-sugar sports drinks
✔️ Low-fat milk
✔️ Foods like bananas, spinach, and yogurt

Athletes and older adults are especially at risk for dehydration, making consistent hydration even more important for muscle health and overall wellness.
