Today is World Stroke Day.

For many families, the hospital stay is only the start. Once someone is home, new questions come up. Why are words harder to find? Why does eating take so long? What should we practice?

That’s where outpatient speech therapy comes in. We work with adults after a stroke on speech, language, thinking skills, and swallowing, at our office in Stuart.

If someone you love is home after a stroke, we’re here to help you figure out next steps.

Schedule a consultation with SpeechRx.

World Stroke Day is tomorrow. Save this one and share it with someone you love.

BE FAST helps you spot a stroke:
B, Balance: sudden loss of balance or dizziness
E, Eyes: sudden trouble seeing
F, Face: one side of the face droops
A, Arm: weakness in one arm or leg
S, Speech: slurred, confused, or hard to understand
T, Time: call 911 right away

Sudden trouble speaking is an emergency. Don’t wait to see if it passes. Call 911 first.

After a stroke, speech therapy can help with talking, understanding, thinking skills, and swallowing.

October is AAC Awareness Month.

AAC stands for augmentative and alternative communication. It covers any tool that helps someone get their message across when speaking is hard. A letter board, a picture book, a tablet app, or a speech-generating device all count.

Some people use AAC for a short time, like after a stroke. Others use it as a condition changes, like primary progressive aphasia.

Many families worry AAC means giving up on speech. In practice, it often takes the pressure off and keeps conversation going.

We help patients find a tool that fits and teach families how to use it too.

Let’s talk about how speech therapy can support you or your loved one.

“Hoarse by mid-afternoon? Throat tight after a long day of talking?

Voice strain shows up in teachers, salespeople, choir singers, and anyone who talks for a living. It’s also something a speech therapist can treat.

Voice therapy works on how you breathe, how much effort you use, and how the sound comes out. We use approaches like Flow Phonation and Conversational Training Therapy, matched to what you need.

If hoarseness lasts more than a few weeks, see your doctor or an ENT first so they can check your vocal folds.

Questions about changes in your voice? Call our team.

🌻 Not all disabilities are visible.

One of our SpeechRx patients survived a stroke caused by a C1 fracture and vertebral artery dissection. Although you may not immediately see the effects of his stroke, he continues to navigate very real challenges.

He wears a Hidden Disabilities Sunflower lanyard when traveling through airports. The sunflower discreetly signals that the wearer has a non-visible disability and may need a little more time, patience, understanding, or assistance. He has found airport staff to be incredibly accommodating when they see it. 🌻

Stroke survivors may experience hidden challenges with communication, cognition, memory, processing, fatigue, balance, swallowing, and more.

🌻 Interested in a Sunflower lanyard? Information and access to the lanyard can be found through the National Aphasia Association at aphasia.org.

Recovery isn’t always something you can see. Sometimes a small sunflower can say a whole lot. 💛

During World FTD (Frontotemporal Dementia) Awareness Week, we’re sharing a simple reminder for caregivers and families: supportive communication can help preserve dignity, connection, and daily participation for individuals living with frontotemporal dementia (FTD).

Small changes can make a big difference:
✨ slow down
✨ give extra time to respond
✨ reduce distractions
✨ use simple, supportive language
✨ focus on connection, not perfection

If you’ve noticed changes in communication, memory, or swallowing, SpeechRx is here to help.

Save this post and share it with a caregiver who may need it.

One of Erica’s patients came to SpeechRx struggling with significant vocal strain and a rough, effortful voice—despite previous exams showing no vocal fold pathology.

During therapy, something exciting happened. 💙 With specialized voice techniques-flow phonation and conversational training therapy (CTT) she focused on airflow, breathing, and reducing muscle tension. She was able to produce a clearer, easier voice with significantly less strain—and hear the difference for herself!

Those moments matter. When a patient realizes, “My voice can sound like me again,” it brings hope, confidence, and motivation to keep going.

At SpeechRx, we don’t just treat the voice—we help patients rediscover the confidence to use it.

🗣️ Struggling with voice changes, vocal fatigue, or strain?
