Sentara Obici Hospital, a 175-bed acute care hospital, is located on Godwin Boulevard in Suffolk. As the community grows, so does Sentara Obici Hospital.

While it opened its state-of-the-art facility in 2002 and merged with Sentara Healthcare in 2006, the hospital continues a 50-year tradition of providing residents of Suffolk and Western Tidewater with patient-centered care in an environment that focuses on healing. In June 2010, Sentara Obici Hospital opened a new three-story, 64,380 square-foot wing with all private beds serving orthopedic, medical and surgical patients.

Recently, we gathered at the beautiful Obici House to celebrate something truly special: 300 colleagues who have dedicated 25 years of service or more to our hospital!

Twenty-five years represents more than just time. It's unwavering commitment. It's showing up for patients, colleagues, and our community day after day. It's being the backbone of who we are.

What struck us most during this celebration wasn't just the extraordinary milestones, it was the sense of family in the room. The lasting connections, the shared stories and the culture our long-serving team members have helped build together. Their contributions have helped shape us and strengthen the exceptional care we provide to the communities we serve.

When Emma Doughtie began her nursing career, she followed in her mother Rita’s footsteps to the same maternity unit at Sentara Obici Hospital. Together, they have shared shifts, built lasting memories, and experienced the ultimate full-circle moment when Emma gave birth on the very floor where both women have dedicated themselves to caring for others.

Across Sentara, mothers and daughters are building careers in the same hospitals, carrying forward a legacy of compassion, teamwork, and service.

Their stories remind us that when people find purpose in what they do, inspiration has a way of being passed down.

This summer, 15 middle school students spent a week at our hospital as part of the Sentara Health Career Camp — suturing bananas, dissecting sheep eyes, and getting an up-close look at what healthcare careers really look like.

They even got a visit from City of Suffolk Department of Fire & Rescue crews, who gave campers a firsthand look at the important work of EMS professionals.

We loved having each student here and can't wait to see where their journeys take them! 💙

Meet Hannah, a medical laboratory scientist in our pathology lab. Lab scientists rotate through areas like hematology, microbiology, clinical chemistry, and more — and today, Hannah is taking us behind the scenes in the blood bank.

From quality control to crossmatching, this part of the lab helps ensure every unit of blood is safe and ready for our patients who need it.

No two days in the lab are the same, but every day plays an important role in patient care.

All hospitals have a history. Few have their founder and namesake still at the heart of it.

Tucked inside Sentara Obici Hospital is the Heritage Garden, the final resting place of Amedeo Obici and his beloved wife, Louise.

Amedeo, founder of Planters Peanuts, built the original Louise Obici Memorial Hospital in her honor after her passing. His one request was that he and Louise always remain at the hospital. When the hospital moved to its current location, they moved too.

Now, more than 25 years after the Heritage Garden was established at our current campus, the space has been thoughtfully renovated with new landscaping, pavers, seating areas and improved drainage — creating a peaceful retreat for patients, visitors and team members alike. All while preserving and showcasing the Obici memorial.

Not everyone has reliable access to healthy food when they leave the hospital or return home. That’s why we’ve brought something new to our campus in partnership with Suffolk Christian Fellowship Center: a community food locker designed to help bridge that gap.

Located outside our Emergency Department entrance, the weatherproof, refrigerated locker provides 24/7 access to fresh, nutritious food for patients being discharged and community members experiencing food insecurity.

With a simple access code provided through our hospital or partner organization, individuals can pick up food at a time that works for them, even outside traditional pantry hours.

This effort is about more than convenience. It’s about dignity, access, and supporting better health beyond our hospital walls. 🍎❤️
