Did you know the first massage & Reiki session I ever had was because I suffered from migraines? That was also the day that I knew this career was what I was meant to be doing with my life.
One of my recent business goals was to start occasionally sharing information and awareness about different issues that massage & reiki can help with. I ran across this video & thought it was a perfect time.
Migraines are not just headaches. You can’t just drink some Gatorade, take some Tylenol & take a nap to get over it. Although everyone is different, mine are hemiplegic & typically last at least 48 hours. The one I had this weekend started on Saturday morning at 7 AM and quite honestly, it’s still kind of hanging on today.
Sometimes I have Aura (mood changes from euphoric to anxious to depressed in the course of a couple of hours, floaters, flashing lights, or zig zags in my vision, fatigue, and stiffness of my neck, etc etc) which can be a warning sign that it’s coming, but sometimes I don’t. Sometimes the weather & barometric pressure triggers it, but sometimes it doesn’t. I have learned my food, stress, & environmental triggers & do my best to avoid them (which totally sucks sometimes).
If you have someone in your life that has migraines, please know they are not “faking it” or exaggerating. It’s truly a disabling neurological disease. I’m grateful I don’t have them everyday anymore, but there are some who do. Please know we are just as upset (or more so) than you when we have to cancel plans, call in sick, or just flat out can’t function at all. There are so many symptoms you can’t see, on top of the excruciating pain. (Vertigo, nausea, depression & anxiety, insomnia, numbness, not being able to to speak or think clearly, phantom smells, blurry or spotted vision, fatigue, sensitivity to sounds, smells, & lights, muscle pain and weakness, cold sweats, lightheadedness, etc, plus whatever side effect our meds give us… and the meds might not even work.)
The number of coping tools, tricks, medications, and supplements migraine sufferers try is pages long. Sometimes they help, sometimes they don’t. I’d love to know what works for you! Share your unhinged tips in the comments. I’ll share mine too. Hopefully we can help each other. 🤗 And if you are lucky enough to never have a migraine, please be compassionate to those who do.
