Why Floridians Need Sunscreen Every Day Even When It's Cloudy

Living in Florida means UV exposure is a year round concern. Even on cloudy days, up to 80% of the sun's UV rays can pe*****te through the clouds and reach your skin. These rays contribute to premature aging, sunspots, wrinkles, and increase your risk of skin cancer.

Daily sunscreen use is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your skin and maintain its long term health. Rain or shine, sunscreen should be part of your daily routine.

To help keep your skin protected this summer, all sunscreens are 20% off through the end of summer at our Tallahassee location.

Stop by Southeastern Dermatology in Tallahassee to pick up your favorite sunscreen while supplies last.

June is Acne Awareness Month.

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions and can affect people of all ages. While breakouts are often associated with teenagers, many adults continue to struggle with acne, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and acne scarring.

Effective acne treatment starts with a personalized approach. Early intervention can help reduce inflammation, prevent scarring, and improve overall skin health. Treatment options may include prescription medications, medical-grade skincare, chemical peels, laser treatments, and professional skincare guidance.

If acne is affecting your confidence or quality of life, our dermatology team is here to help. Schedule an appointment to discuss treatment options tailored to your skin's needs.

KNOW THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SKIN CANCER

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, but early detection can make all the difference. Knowing what to look for can help protect your health and the health of your loved ones.

The 4 common types of skin cancer:

▫️ Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)
The most common and least aggressive type. Often appears as a pearly, shiny, or pink bump that may bleed or scab.

▫️ Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)
May appear as a scaly, crusted, or wart-like growth. SCC can grow deeper into the skin if left untreated.

▫️ Melanoma
The most serious form of skin cancer. Watch for changes in size, shape, or color of moles or spots. Remember the ABCDEs of melanoma detection:
✔️ Asymmetry
✔️ Border irregularity
✔️ Color variation
✔️ Diameter larger than 6mm
✔️ Evolving changes

▫️ Merkel Cell Carcinoma (MCC)
A rare but aggressive skin cancer that may appear as a fast-growing red, purple, or skin-colored bump.

Skin Cancer Prevention Tips:
✔️ Wear sunscreen daily SPF 30+
✔️ Reapply every 2 hours outdoors
✔️ Wear protective clothing & hats
✔️ Avoid tanning beds
✔️ Schedule regular skin exams

If you notice a new, changing, bleeding, or non-healing spot, don’t ignore it. Early detection saves lives.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, an important time to focus on prevention, early detection, and education. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, but when caught early, it is highly treatable.

Routine skin exams play a critical role in identifying abnormal moles, sun damage, and early signs of conditions such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Many skin cancers develop gradually and may go unnoticed without a professional evaluation.

It is important to monitor your skin for any changes, including new or evolving moles, spots that itch, bleed, or do not heal, and areas of discoloration. Annual skin checks are recommended, and more frequent exams may be necessary for patients with a history of skin cancer, significant sun exposure, or a family history of melanoma.

During a full-body skin exam at Southeastern Dermatology, a provider will carefully assess your skin from head to toe, document any areas of concern, and recommend next steps if needed. This may include monitoring, biopsy, or treatment.

Protecting your skin daily is equally important. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, wear protective clothing, and avoid peak sun exposure when possible.

Schedule your skin exam today at Southeastern Dermatology.

After 21 incredible years, we are saying goodbye to an amazing provider, mentor, and friend Chris Jones, PA-C

Chris has been a part of the Southeastern Dermatology family for over two decades, caring for patients in both medical and cosmetic dermatology with compassion, dedication, and true expertise. His impact on our team and our patients is something that cannot be replaced.

We are so grateful for the years we’ve shared as coworkers, but even more as family

To celebrate his retirement and his last day last Friday, we showed out the right way with Momma P’s Ice Cream Truck (because nothing says “we’ll miss you” like ice cream and great memories)

Chris, thank you for everything you’ve given to this practice and to all of us. Wishing you nothing but relaxation, happiness, and all the sweet moments retirement has to offer you deserve it

And in honor of today, May the 4th be with you always

April is Rosacea Awareness Month and serves as an important reminder to recognize and support patients affected by Rosacea.

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that commonly presents with persistent redness, flushing, visible blood vessels, and acne-like breakouts. It can also be associated with skin sensitivity, burning, and flare-ups triggered by environmental and lifestyle factors. While it is a long-term condition, it is highly manageable with appropriate medical treatment and a consistent skincare routine.

At Southeastern Dermatology, we focus on identifying individual triggers and creating customized treatment plans tailored to each patient’s skin. Treatment options may include prescription topical or oral medications, laser and IPL therapy, and medical-grade skincare designed to support a healthy skin barrier.

Common triggers include sun exposure, heat and cold extremes, spicy foods, alcohol, stress, and certain skincare products. Avoiding known triggers and maintaining a gentle, consistent skincare routine are key steps in reducing flare-ups and improving skin comfort.

We proudly serve patients in Tallahassee, Crawfordville, and Perry, Florida, providing accessible dermatologic care across the region.

If you are experiencing persistent facial redness or sensitivity, a dermatology evaluation can help confirm a diagnosis and guide an effective treatment plan.
