Nobody teaches you how to read a skincare label, so here's the plain-English version.

Ingredients are listed by weight, highest first. That means the first three ingredients basically ARE the product. Everything past the fifth or sixth is usually there in small amounts, sometimes vanishingly small, no matter how prominently it's featured on the front of the jar.

A few more things worth knowing. The word 'fragrance' is allowed to stand in for a mix of components that don't get listed individually, so one word can carry a lot of cargo. Botanical names are usually written in Latin, so rosemary shows up as Rosmarinus officinalis, which can make a simple plant list look intimidating when it isn't.

And the length of the list tells you something too. Every ingredient is there for a reason, and it's fair to ask what the reason is. On our labels the answer is usually 'it came out of the garden.'

There's a lovely old tradition of infusing herbs in oil on a sunny windowsill. The warmth speeds everything up, and there's real romance to a row of golden jars in the light.

We do the exact opposite, and here's why. The same light that warms the jar also degrades the plant compounds you're trying to capture. Photo-degradation is the same reason olive oil comes in dark green bottles and why herbs keep better in a cupboard than on a sunny shelf.

So our infusions happen in a dark, climate-controlled room at 74 degrees, for six to eight weeks. No shortcuts from the sun, just time. The sun makes an infusion faster. The dark makes it better.

Moringa is not technically an herb. It's a tree, and it's a tree in a hurry. Given a Florida summer, a moringa seedling can put on ten feet of growth in a single season.

We keep ours cut low on purpose. Constant trimming keeps the leaves within arm's reach and tricks the tree into pushing out tender new growth all summer instead of racing for the sky. The leaves themselves are tiny, hundreds of little oval leaflets on each stem, and harvesting them is exactly the kind of slow, fussy work you can't rush.

It loves the heat that makes most garden plants sulk. July is its peak: this is the month it puts out maximum growth, visibly more every single day.
