From South Sudan to Canada to Kansas, Mawien Akot’s journey has been guided by a desire to care for others and make a difference. 💙💚

Mawien began his healthcare career in Canada, working in home health before pursuing Nuclear Medicine Technology at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. Years later, his journey brought him to Edwardsville Care and Rehabilitation Center, where he had a connection through his wife, Rebecca, who worked there as an agency nurse.

Since joining the Mission Health family, Mawien has continued to grow his career and invest in his future. With support through Mission Health’s partnership with Great Jobs KC, he recently completed his LPN program, graduating at the top of his class with an impressive 3.87 GPA!

But Mawien’s journey is far from over. He has already been accepted into two RN programs and hopes to one day become a nurse practitioner with Mission Health.

For fellow team members thinking about taking the next step in their own careers, Mawien has a simple message: Believe in yourself and make the decision to move forward.

Some leaders leave an impact through what they accomplish. Others leave an impact through the way they make people feel. Shane Marler has done both. 💙💚

After 11 years with Mission Health, Shane, our Regional Director of Business Development in Kansas, is beginning a well-deserved retirement. While we’re excited for all that lies ahead for him, saying “see you later” to someone who has meant so much to our Mission family is never easy.

Throughout his 11 years with Mission, Shane has truly embodied our CARES values in the way he leads, serves, and supports others. Whether lending a hand with a project, supporting a teammate, or simply being there when someone needs him, Shane has always made those around him feel valued and supported.

His leadership has made an incredible impact, but the friendships he has built along the way may be an even greater part of his legacy.

Football season is back, and we’re kicking things off Home Office style! 🏈🎉

With college football starting this weekend and the NFL right behind it, our Home Office team got into the game-day spirit with a tailgate party filled with good food, team pride, and a little friendly rivalry!

And because one celebration just wasn’t enough, we also cheered on our August birthday crew! 🥳

Happy First Week of School, Tampa Bay students! 🚌🎒

While Mission Giving has traditionally been celebrated during our Leadership Conference and the holiday season, Botkin Care and Rehab's Activity Director DeeDee envisioned a way to expand the initiative by introducing quarterly community service projects. This summer, our 31 communities participated in a local school supply drive, supporting students and schools in the neighborhoods they serve and strengthening the connections that make our communities so special.

Our home office and regional teams came together to donate school supplies to the Hillsborough Education Foundation, helping students in Hillsborough County be prepared for the 2026-2027 school year!

Thank you to everyone who donated and made a difference in the lives of our community's students.

After more than 40 years of dedicated service in skilled nursing, Mission Health Chief Nursing Officer Karen McDonald is preparing to retire from her role at the end of 2026. While she is stepping away from this position, we're grateful that Karen will continue serving Mission Health as Senior Advisor to the CEO, where her experience, wisdom, and leadership will continue to guide our organization.

From her beginnings as a floor nurse to becoming a nationally respected nursing leader and advocate, Karen has made a lasting impact on our residents, team members, and communities. Her commitment to clinical excellence, mentorship, and compassionate leadership has helped shape the Mission Experience and inspired generations of caregivers along the way.

Karen's influence extends far beyond our organization, but her greatest legacy is the countless lives she has touched through her steadfast dedication to residents, families, and those who care for them every day.

Please join us in congratulating Karen on this incredible milestone and thanking her for her extraordinary leadership and commitment to Mission Health. Congratulations, Karen!
