Established in 1916 by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word as a Catholic, non-profit hospital, we offer a full scope of expansive health care services including women’s health, emergency services, senior health, cancer care, heart care, surgery, imaging,

rehabilitation, and much more. We strive to provide continuous, compassionate care for our patients and their families, always looking for ways to incorporate the latest best practices and new technology into our services. Ahead of , we recognize the strength of patients and the compassionate care teams who walk with them through every stage of their cancer journey. At 65, lifelong musician Rick Shaw never expected to go from the roar of concerts to the quiet of a radiation machine, but a 2023 check-up revealed stage 3 prostate cancer.
After a robotic prostatectomy the following January showed the cancer had spread beyond the prostate, Rick was referred to Radiation Oncology Specialist Charles Matthews, who promised care for both body and spirit.
Rick completed 39 radiation treatments, spending the sessions listening to worship music and praying with fellow patients. His PSA levels are now undetectable, and today he returns not for treatment, but to encourage others on the same journey.

Men's Health Month serves as a reminder that postponing routine care can allow preventable conditions to go undetected, making early screenings and regular checkups more important than ever. Because health concerns identified early are more treatable, Family Nurse Practitioner James Owens recommends annual health checkups beginning at age 45 or earlier for those with a family history of chronic or serious conditions, specifically heart disease, stroke, diabetes, prostate and colon cancer and high blood pressure.

Congratulations to Mike Severa, RN, our newest DAISY Award winner!
Mike is recognized for his calm presence and compassionate care during a very emotional time for his patient's family. His nominator shared, "Our emotions were running high. After getting admitted, we met a wonderful nurse who talked to us calmly and explained what he was doing for our daddy. His tone of voice and kindness put our fears to rest. If we ever have to go back to the hospital again, I pray the good Lord puts us with him!"

In honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we are celebrating saints like Saint Paul Miki, the Patron Saint of Japan and one of the first native Japanese Christians whose faith endured even in the face of persecution.

As a Jesuit seminarian and gifted preacher, Paul Miki boldly shared the Gospel at a time when Christianity was outlawed in Japan. In 1597, he and 25 companions were arrested and crucified for their faith. From the cross, Paul continued to preach, stating just before his death “After Christ’s example, I forgive my persecutors. I do not hate them. I ask God to have pity on all, and I hope my blood will fall on my fellow men as a fruitful rain.” His courage and unwavering trust in God helped sustain the Catholic faith in Japan for generations. St. Paul Miki reminds us that even in the most difficult moments, faith, mercy and hope can leave a lasting impact.

Hannah is recognized for her compassionate, calming bedside manner and for going above and beyond to meet her patients' needs. Her nominator shared, "After being awake for over 45 hours in labor, I was exhausted and weak by the time I arrived at postpartum care. Hannah recognized my emotions and made sure every need and want was met. She was calm, full of compassion and stayed by my side for both nights of my stay. She clearly cares for her patients and loves her job."

This Memorial Day, we pay tribute to the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. As we gathered with friends and family, we also took a moment to acknowledge those who never made it home with a Table of Honor and a short prayer service last week, as an enduring symbol of remembrance.

In honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we are celebrating saints like Saint Magdalene of Nagasaki. Born near Nagasaki, Japan, Magdalene endured the loss of her family to martyrdom, yet her faith only deepened. Magdalene taught catechism, sought alms for the poor, visited the sick and encouraged fellow Christians during intense persecution. After several spiritual leaders were martyred, she continued their mission and eventually surrendered herself to authorities in 1634 to strengthen the courage of others. She endured torture for 13 days before her martyrdom. Canonized in 1987, Saint Magdalene remains a powerful witness of courage, solidarity and unwavering love for Christ.

Stroke Program Manager Lauren Beckham says life after a stroke can vary for everyone, with some individuals regaining full function, while others continue to face lasting effects. Quick treatment and quality therapy can make all the difference, significantly reducing the lasting effects. This , she encourages making healthy choices, understanding your risk factors, and prioritizing your overall well-being to lower your stroke risk.

When it comes to a stroke, every second counts, which is why our stroke response team moves quickly to deliver rapid, lifesaving treatment for every patient who comes through our doors. 50-year-old Heather Smith experienced that firsthand when she had her stroke last September.
Heather was pulling trash at her job when she noticed a stabbing pain in the back of her neck. Thinking she had been hit by something, she turned around, expecting to see blood or someone behind her, but neither was there. As the pain intensified, she tried to call her supervisor, who noticed her slurred speech and called an ambulance that brought her to our hospital, where her daughter works as a nurse.
There, Heather received a Tenecteplase (TNK) shot within 16 minutes, setting a hospital record for the fastest administration time on a patient. Because of her speedy and reliable care, Heather was able to go home after a few days' stay and continues to improve. She now has a new outlook on life, one focused on healthier habits, and looks forward to welcoming her third grandchild.
This , she's grateful to her care team and encourages others to stay active, be mindful of what they put into their bodies, and advocate for their health.

Jessica was recently honored as a Carter BloodCare Community Champion, an award recognizing individuals who go above and beyond to advocate for lifesaving blood donation and strengthen community partnerships. Through her leadership and collaboration with Carter BloodCare, Jessica helps maintain a safe and reliable blood supply for patients across the Texarkana region.
