Congratulations to James Bowie High player Garrette Surratt on being crowned our Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Athlete of the Week! Garrette continues to shine on the football field, helping his team clinch a playoff spot with a win last Friday vs. Big Sandy, with 30 carries for 198 yards and 4 TDs. His trainer, Colby Barron, wishes Garrette and the Pirates good luck in the playoffs. We look forward to following Garrette's continued success and also wish him the best of luck!

We wrapped up Physical Therapy Month with a cookout to celebrate our incredible Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants and Rehabilitation Technicians. Our entire therapy team came out to enjoy food and fellowship in our courtyard as we recognized the difference they make in the lives of our patients and their families. While PT Month may be over, we remain grateful for the important role these team members play in helping patients improve mobility, regain independence and safely return to their communities all year-round.

Make your health a priority this month with our Just Breathe event. For $150, participants receive comprehensive cardiovascular and pulmonary screenings that provide early detection for heart, vascular, and lung conditions.

Participants must complete a pre-screening before scheduling. Once pre-screened, participants are scheduled for a Friday appointment during the event. Screenings take place on the third Friday of each month from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm at our Pine Street location.

Our NICU team helped create some Halloween fun for our smallest patients, dressing them in adorable costumes and making special memories for families. These moments of joy remind us that even the littlest celebrations can make a big difference.

Congratulations to Atlanta High player Makayla Collins, Hooks High player Sidney Haley and Arkansas High player Bralon Thompson on being crowned our Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Athletes of the Week!

Volleyball takes skill, teamwork and consistency, and Makayla and Sidney continue to make a major impact for their schools.

In matches against Queen City and Redwater, Makayla recorded 15 kills and 12 kills, respectively, and now has 334 kills in the season. Sidney has helped lead the Hooks Hornets to a district championship and an undefeated district record. In her last 2 games, she posted back-to-back double-doubles while combining 47 assists and 31 serving points.

Over on the football field, Bralon continues to put together an outstanding season for Arkansas High. He hauled in 5 catches for 179 yards and 2 touchdowns against Hot Springs this past week and currently leads all Arkansas wide receivers with 1,175 receiving yards this season. Bralon's excellence continues in the classroom, where he maintains a 3.8 GPA.

We're proud of all our outstanding athletes and wish them the best of luck for the rest of the season.

For over six years, Colleen McLoughlin has served as a volunteer Associate at our hospital, giving back to the same organization that would later play an important role in her recovery. Colleen was descending a flight of stairs when she fell backward, sustaining multiple injuries, including a compression fracture in her spine. A second fall not long afterward only added to her pain and injuries, making everyday activities increasingly difficult.

After learning her symptoms were not improving, Pulmonologist Dr. Malcolm Smith recommended physical therapy as a way to help her find relief and get back to her daily routine. The next six weeks saw Colleen work through 12 sessions focused on improving her balance, mobility and confidence, helping her overcome the fear of navigating stairs that developed after her falls. She says that having a plan and clear goals from the beginning helped her stay focused throughout therapy, and she successfully achieved most of them.

Now experiencing less pain, Colleen has since returned to her daily activities such as raking around her house, climbing a ladder and changing a light bulb. Today, she continues to heal, using exercises she learned in therapy whenever needed.

During Physical Therapy Month, Colleen encourages others not to be afraid of physical therapy and to give it a chance. She is grateful to our entire physical therapy team for helping her regain confidence and independence, especially Josh and Leah, whom she describes as committed, compassionate, and amazing.

Taking advantage of the beautiful weather, our inpatient rehabilitation team recently brought therapy outdoors for a catch-and-release fishing session on our campus! Patients had the opportunity to build confidence and put skills developed during therapy into practice while spending time with family and enjoying a favorite pastime. From fishing to gardening, cooking and art projects, we're always looking for opportunities to incorporate patients' hobbies and interests into therapy.

Congratulations to Prescott High player Kayden Gleason on being crowned our Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Athlete of the Week! As a football athlete, Kayden works hard, has proven his toughness, and plays all over the field, says Athletic Trainer Ryan Gill. In a 63-0 win over Parkers Chapel, Kayden had 3 rushes, 119 yards and 1 touchdown, further demonstrating the effort and determination he brings to the field each week. We look forward to seeing what he accomplishes next and wish him and his team luck for the rest of the season.

As a medical oncology social worker, Lakecia Washington spent years helping patients navigate their cancer diagnoses, treatment decisions and the emotions that come with both. She would face her own journey in 2020 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Lakecia had been getting her mammograms since turning 45, so when she first discovered a lump in her breast, she immediately contacted her primary care physician. A biopsy would later reveal she had stage 2 invasive ductal carcinoma, a fast-growing, aggressive breast cancer that starts in the milk duct and spreads into the surrounding tissue.

While the diagnosis was difficult to hear, Lakecia already understood the treatment process, the questions she needed to ask, and the resources available to support her and her family.

Since 2008, she's facilitated monthly breast cancer support groups at our ministry, educated women through the Texas Breast and Cervical Program and helped countless patients navigate their own cancer journeys. That experience gave her a roadmap during an overwhelming time and helped make the path ahead less stressful than it might have otherwise been.

But as her patients did not have to journey alone, neither would she. She had the support of her family and her fellow CHRISTUS Associates to help care for her every step of the way. Over the next two years, she underwent chemotherapy, reconstruction surgery and radiation therapy.

Lakecia chose to receive her chemotherapy treatment at CHRISTUS, where she had spent years working alongside a team whose compassion, expertise and commitment to patients had already earned her trust. Receiving reliable care close to home also meant her family could remain together and focus on supporting one another rather than navigating treatment at another facility.

Today, she's grateful to our entire staff, especially Teresa Hawkins, Yolanda Bone, and Drs. Hesham Hazin and Charles Matthews for providing excellent care that she said she would choose again.

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, she reminds others not to let fear control their actions, as it can affect their outcomes. Instead, she recommends talking to your doctors, getting mammograms, and doing self-breast exams between mammograms as familiarity with one's body can help identify changes that should be discussed with a physician.
