If you are wondering whether braces hurt, most patients experience mild soreness for the first two to three days rather than severe pain.

Think of getting braces like trying a new workout. You feel it most at the beginning.

When braces first start applying pressure, some soreness for the first two to three days is completely expected. As your mouth adjusts, that discomfort typically fades and the teeth begin doing exactly what we want them to do: move.

So, do braces hurt? A little soreness, yes. Severe pain, no.

If you are wondering why your child should see an orthodontist around age 7, one of the biggest reasons is that some problems are easier to correct before more space is lost.

In this case, baby teeth were lost prematurely and space was already being lost for the permanent teeth underneath. Because it was identified early, we were able to regain that space and create a better path for the adult teeth to come in.

An evaluation around age 7 does not automatically mean braces. It gives us the chance to watch development closely and step in when timing can truly make a difference.

An underbite is one of the bite problems we do not always want to simply watch as a child grows.

When the lower teeth sit in front of the upper teeth, the lower jaw may continue to outpace the upper jaw as growth continues. In certain cases, addressing that relationship early gives us an opportunity to guide the bite into a better position while a child is still developing.

The goal is not to put every 7 or 8 year old in braces. It is to recognize the cases where timing can make a meaningful difference and potentially help avoid a more complicated correction later.

Braces or clear aligners for your child? The better question is: what does their treatment actually need?

Clear aligners can be a great option for certain tooth movements, but more complex cases may need the added control braces can provide, especially when we are correcting the bite or moving the roots of the teeth.
