While there have been no reported cases of Cyclosporiasis in North Dakota, the CDC is investigating a nationwide outbreak affecting more than 30 states, including parts of the Midwest. Cyclosporiasis is an internal infection caused by a microscopic parasite often found on fresh produce. It can lead to severe gastrointestinal distress, including explosive diarrhea, intense stomach cramps, bloating, and fatigue.

Federal investigators believe the current outbreak is linked to contaminated fresh leafy greens, including bagged salad mixes and lettuce.

Despite the alarming headlines, fruits and vegetables should still be incorporated into your diet. "Don't stop eating fruits and vegetables—just make sure you're washing them thoroughly, even if the package says they're pre-washed," says Jeff Moberg, PA-C, a provider at Tioga Medical Center. "And, as usual, see your provider if you develop any concerning symptoms."

Simple food safety habits can help protect you and your family from foodborne illness. Check out the tips below and learn more about food safety at cdc.gov/foodsafety.
