Helen Mirra

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Helen Elizabeth Mirra, of Little Egg Harbor, NJ. A beloved mother, devoted wife, and treasured friend, Helen peacefully departed this world on June 11, 2026. Born on February 7, 1937, in LaGrange, Georgia, Helen lived a life rich with love, laughter, and kindness.

Helen was the cherished daughter of the late Lloyd and Melva Bowles and the sister of Jeannine Chambers. She was predeceased by her beloved brother James Bowles and her dear son, Eugene Joel Mirra. Her unwavering love and strength will forever be remembered by her surviving family: her devoted husband of 68 years, Eugene (Gene) Mirra; her loving daughter, Tammy Feldman, and her husband, Michael; and her caring son, Jeff Mirra, and his wife Dawn. Helen was also a proud grandmother to seven grandchildren and a great-grandmother to three.

On August 25, 1957, Helen married the love of her life, Gene Mirra, in LaGrange, Georgia and ultimately settled down in South Plainfield, NJ. Together, they crafted a well lived life of shared experiences, raising three children and creating together a life defined by much love and fond memories. Her family was her greatest joy, and she delighted in every gathering, every shared meal, and every story told around the family table.

Helen dedicated over 20 years of service to NJ Bell as a telephone operator, where her warm voice and kind demeanor touched the lives of countless individuals. Her career was marked by her dedication, and her reliability.

A woman of varied interests, Helen found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She was a passionate card player, loved the challenge of mahjong, and looked forward to trips to Atlantic City with Gene and their friends. Her vibrant spirit thrived in the bowling alleys, where she participated in local leagues for many years. Alongside her family, Helen's heart was especially touched by her canine companions; her many dogs over the years were a source of immense joy and comfort.

In lieu of a traditional service, the family asks that you honor Helen’s memory with a donation to the Friends of Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter (https://www.fosocas.org/donations/), an organization close to her heart, reflecting her deep love for animals.

Steven Joseph Fidalgo, 68, of Little Egg Harbor, NJ passed away peacefully at home on Friday, June 5, 2026.

Steven was born in Newark, NJ to Luciano and Marilyn Terrick Fidalgo. Over the years he called many places home, including the Netherlands, Fort Monmouth, Bayville, and Forked River, before settling in Little Egg Harbor in 2018.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army. Following his military service, Steven earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Monmouth University and built a distinguished career spanning nearly 40 years as a Senior Engineer with First Energy Corp./Jersey Central Power and Light in Forked River, NJ. A highly skilled and deeply respected engineer, he generously mentored countless young engineers throughout his career, all while raising a family he was endlessly devoted to.

Steven was known as a meticulous man who could fix just about anything and always kept himself busy. He was an avid soccer fan who played in his younger years and never missed the World Cup. He loved to travel, exercise, go on walks, and above all, be with his family. A naturally social person, he could strike up a conversation with anyone he met. His greatest joys were his wife, his two daughters and their husbands, and his grandchildren, whom he adored deeply and of whom he could not have been more proud. His grandchildren, who all lovingly called him Pepére, were his heart. On the rare occasion he sat still, you could find him watching the loudest movie possible at full volume on his surround sound system, most likely a James Bond film, for what was surely the hundredth time.

Steven is preceded in death by his parents, Luciano and Marilyn Terrick Fidalgo; his sister, Loren (nee Fidalgo) Varga; his grandmother, Marie Concetta Fidalgo; his father-in-law, Roger Leonard Cloutier; and his sister-in-law, Deena Groninger.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Debra; his daughters, Nicole Volrath and her husband Kristopher of Forest Hill, MD, and Deena Hughes and her husband Christopher of Barnegat, NJ; his grandchildren, Madeline (17), Grant (15), and Tanner (13) Volrath, and his twin grandchildren Julia and Grayson Hughes (9); his sister, Dawn Fidalgo of Bayville, NJ; his brother, Ken Fidalgo of Toms River, NJ; his brother-in-law, Paul Varga of Philadelphia, PA; his mother-in-law, Mariette Maréchal of Belgium; his brother-in-law, Retired Major General Roger Cloutier Jr. and his wife Diane; dear friends Pat and Dave Volrath, Joe and Susan Cicalo, and George and Debbie Hughes; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and colleagues.

A Memorial Gathering will be held on Thursday, June 11, 2026 from 12:00–4:00 PM, with a Funeral Service and Military Honors beginning at 4:00 PM, at Maxwell Funeral Home, 160 Mathistown Road, Little Egg Harbor, NJ 08087.
