The story began on a childhood playground.
A little girl saw another child being hurt and stepped between them.
She didn't know she was rehearsing her future.
She was learning:
I am safe when I am useful.
The friendship lasted decades.
The roles became deeply established.
One woman became the protector.
The other became the protected.
Advice flowed.
Loyalty flowed.
Support flowed.
The relationship felt permanent because the contract had been written so early that neither woman had ever stopped to read it.
Then the protector needed protection.
And the relationship changed.
Suddenly, the person who had spent decades being the emotional armor discovered that armor was not reciprocal.
The friendship could tolerate the savior.
It could not tolerate the woman underneath the armor.
That was the first lesson:
If your relationship only works when you are strong enough to carry both people, it isn't reciprocity.
