Sciatica! It can be so life disruptive, just constant pain that disrupts being able to sit, stand, or even lie down. That stops driving, working at desks, standing at concerts, being able to carry children--you name it.

This patient has had relief for a while, thankfully, and comes in for maintenance appointments whenever they feel sciatic symptoms coming back, or if they accidentally reinjure their back.

This week I've had a few different patients who arrived and honestly had little to no health concerns or complaints. I was very happy to see them in that state, not only because I want everyone to feel easeful and happy, but also because that's a fantastic time to come in for acupuncture, as I can assess with feeling the pulse and channel palpation for any glimmers of something oncoming or a chronic issue returning, and head them off at the pass.

Preventative medicine really is the best, if possible, and acupuncture is fantastic for it!

A nasty cough ran through Tucson a couple weeks ago--so many of my patients had it, and my family was also brought low with it (pretty sure baby was patient zero, naturally).

I only learned some of my patients had the cough after the fact, though. Please do feel free to text or call or email if you're not feeling well! Even if you're not up to coming into the office so I can help, I can at least provide recommendations of kitchen medicine, herbs, or physical things you can do to find relief.

Call or text 520-609-8488 with questions or concerns about your health! I'm happy to help.

I got the chance to focus in on an issue with some yin tuina today! Yin tuina is very different from the more "yang" tuina I normally do.

That is, where I generally focus on the spine and back with manual therapy that's intent on bringing circulation to muscles and connective tissue, yin tuina involves holding a body part or joint at length in a particular way and with particular intent, feeling for micro-movements in the tissues and helping the patient's body feel safe enough to release long-held traumas and patterns.

In this case it was for someone who's plantar fasciitis pain seems to be coming not from the more usual causes, but from a strain in the ligaments inside their foot from a trip to Europe many years ago--I felt some very interesting movement inside their foot after 20 minutes!

If you'd like to try this or acupuncture out, call or text 520-609-8488, or schedule online at the link in my bio!

Saw my first moringa flower today! It bloomed on a sapling we'd just planted, and its smell is tawny and verdant in a way I'd not perceived before (though you really have to get up in its business to smell it on an individual blossom).

Moringa has a a lot of healthy properties for consumption, and you can use just about every part of it--we're excited for ours to grow larger (especially as they apparently grow fast!).

Did you know I'm in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, and related programs like their Federal Employee program and Anthem? I'm always happy to check what your current acupuncture benefits are--FEP participants almost always have a low co-pay of $35 dollars, for example. All I need is the front and back of your insurance card and your date of birth, and I can get back to you usually within a day.

I can also check other insurance companies for out of network benefits!

I've just started Kameron Hurley's novel The Stars Are Legion, but this line caught my attention. I've had patients with insomnia describe their sleep this way--that they wouldn't even have been aware that they slept, except that they dreamed, so they must have been asleep at some point.

If that's ever been the case for you--or if you have any other sleep issues, like apnea, waking during the night, trouble falling asleep, or more--sleep is a special interest for me, so I'd love to help.

I had two different patients bring up tattoos today in terms of how they might affect one's health, specifically in regards to the Eastern model of medicine.

One patient had recently had some beautiful touch-up work done on a tattoo on his upper arm, and noted to his surprise that the pain and tingling we'd been working on in that arm were surprisingly less after having had the tattoo worked on. The other told me about the interesting story of Otzi the iceman, an archaeological find that suggested that tattooing was used as a kind of therapy for various issues.

It's an interesting topic to contemplate, especially having tattoos myself! I can see argument that a given tattoo is at least temporarily like an open wound, but also can see argument as to how the act of tattooing might clear obstructive factors from channels that have been causing pain or dysfunction.

Happy to chat more about it, or just get to see your tattoos! Call or text 520-609-8488, or schedule online at the link in my bio.

I had an interesting case earlier in the week where a patient developed acute tinnitus in the midst of having a case of food borne illness. Now, it's hard to parse out a particular connection in Western terms, but in terms of Eastern medicine, food borne illness symptoms are often treated via herbs which correct issues with the channels that run along the sides of the body...including the ears. So it made sense to me that if that type of illness can be treated that way, that same type of illness might injure that channel. When I palpated the patient's channels, their lateral channel on the side of the tinnitus was indeed completely obstructed, so I did my best to get it running from top to bottom.

Happy to help any way I can! Call or text 520-609-8488, or schedule online at the link in my bio.
