According to the Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health, 96 percent of birthing-aged women in the United States live in an area with a shortage of maternal mental health professionals.

Perinatal Psychiatry Access Programs (PPAPs) have helped to bridge the gap for maternal mental healthcare. Healthcare professionals can receive education and support to treat maternal mental health conditions.

Becoming a new mom or expecting a baby can be overwhelming, and support is crucial during these times. The National Maternal Mental Health Hotline offers free, confidential help 24/7.

Call or text 1-833-TLC-MAMA to connect with professional counselors. This service is also available to partners and family members. Assistance is offered in English and Spanish, with interpreters available for over 60 other languages.

The ongoing trial of Lindsay Clancy has brought the topic of maternal mental health to the national stage. Clancy is accused of killing her three children — Cora (5), Dawson (3), and Callan (8 months) — on January 24, 2023. She then attempted su***de and is now paralyzed from the waist down due to injuries she sustained in the incident.

Despite actively seeking medical care, Lindsay Clancy, who is white, well-educated, married, and a labor and delivery nurse—factors that typically reduce the likelihood of falling through the cracks of our fragmented maternal healthcare system—still experienced significant failures within this broken and complex system.

This case is a wake-up call for our country. Elected officials, healthcare leaders, insurers, and all who support new and expectant parents play a part in making maternal mental health a priority. We must invest in sustained, systemic change to ensure no other family suffers this kind of tragedy.

Pregnancy and Postpartum Psychosis (PPP) is a medical emergency impacting 1-2 individuals per 1,000 births. PPP is often temporary and treatable, but it increases the risk of harm to self or others and thus should be treated as a medical emergency.
