In 2016 I sat in my OB’s office in tears and told the medical assistant that I believed I was displaying signs and symptoms of postpartum depression. They had me fill out a questionnaire and never even mentioned my answers during the appointment.

Last year when I was searching for a therapist I called a few that were on a list provided by my insurance and never received calls back.

We shouldn’t have to work this hard to receive mental healthcare. And the truth is, people often do. There are waitlists due to a shortage of mental health providers, insurance steps, and often times we can’t even afford the copays or coinsurances.

Please know that if you are pregnant or postpartum and struggling please know that there are several providers out there who will take you seriously and I will help you find an OB or midwife who won’t brush you off. Celeste with Northwest Indiana Center for Maternal Wellness has trained volunteers and resources and Postpartum Support International has made it their mission to try to help as well! Megan with Stillwaters Women's Mental Wellness is fabulous and also offer psychiatry and therapy and can handle medication management as well.

It is a blessing to be welcomed into the birth space no matter whether home or hospital. I am truly inspired at the strength, love and kindness all of my clients display.

This week is Birth Trauma Awareness Week.

When I think of when I gave birth to my own babies I often think about how scared I was.
I think about:
-not being informed on how dangerous my situation was
-constantly having my veins blown over and over again to the point where I cried anytime I had to have an IV placed
-having to advocate for myself on not wearing a hospital gown and being able to take a bath during labor
-nurses having to kick my husband out of the room as my blood pressure plummeted and I started bleeding
-non stress tests and biophysical profiles
-24 hour urine collections where I had to be away from my oldest child
-having to be induced before 37 weeks with my second child
-a forced blood transfusion where the nurses admitted to me that they had no idea how to give me a transfusion and made me question if I was safe in their care

All of these things have taken me years to heal from. But each birth I attend as a doula allows me to help others avoid these things. Each birth and postpartum client allows me to ensure that I can get those who’ve experienced birth trauma the proper help and resources.

Today I had one of my most fun consultations so far.

There’s something so special about “clicking” with potential clients so effortlessly. And there’s something even more special about getting interviewed by not only the person giving birth, but also by their supportive partner.
