Most people who think about su***de don’t actually want to end their lives. They are simply seeking relief from the intense emotional pain they are experiencing and don’t see viable alternatives to solving the problem. Most people do NOT want to die. They simply want to end their suffering. Studies indicate that 2 out of 3 adults believe they don’t have enough knowledge to tell if someone is considering su***de, but 8 out of 10 are open to learning how they can do more to help someone in need. For example, learning to identify risk factors and warning signs; reviewing information and advice on su***de prevention; participating in CPR training; and offering support.

Through our work, StrengthUnited supports families, prevents sexual and domestic violence, and provides healing and support to survivors of abuse. Our goal is to transform a traumatic event in an individual’s or family’s life into a source of strength. For more information, please call our 24-hour support and referral lines:

National Nonprofit Day recognizes the enormous impact these organizations have on communities. It’s an opportunity to thank the millions of employees, volunteers, donors and supporters who work to improve the lives of others.
The date coincides with the anniversary of the signing of the Tariff Act of 1894, a law that allowed certain charities to be exempt from paying federal taxes in the United States. Over time, August 17 became a date dedicated to recognizing the work of the nonprofit sector.
There are approximately 1.3 million nonprofit organizations in the United States, employing more than 12 million people, making the sector one of the largest employers in the country. Furthermore, the vast majority are small organizations with a strong community focus.
