ACHIEVE Thankfully not everyone shared this philosophy. The first programs were offered by volunteer teachers in donated space in a church basement.

ACHIEVE, a Chapter of The Arc New York, is the premier provider of services to individuals with intellectual, developmental and other disabilities in Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Madison and Tioga Counties. A Brief History of ACHIEVE
More than sixty years ago it was a common practice for children with intellectual and other developmental disabilities to be placed in state institutions. Those families who chose to keep their children at home were told that their children were not eligible for and could not benefit from an education, something to which every child is entitled. Ten brave families - Walter and Kathryn Baird, Clyde and Elsie Brown, Howard and Esther Hall, Siegfried and Jane Heierman, Harry and Roye Sall, George and Josephine Sheehe, Joseph and Esther Stuckert, Robert and Annette Sturdevant, Floyd and Marian Taylor, and Glenn and Marian Young - who wanted a better life for their children joined with another group of parents in New York State to establish the Broome County Association for Retarded Children so that their children could attend school, receive an education, and lead a productive life. In September of 1952 when this organization was established, ACHIEVE's founding families started out with nothing but a common goal and dream. Parents went door-to-door to collect donations, and in a few years these passionate families were able to establish a school program and summer camp for their children and other children in the community. ACHIEVE continued to grow as we merged with the Chenango ARC in September of 2016. Our organization welcomed 400 new program participants and over 100 new employees to the ACHIEVE family. ACHIEVE’s founding families had a vision for the future. Today ACHIEVE has grown into an twenty-nine-million dollar agency operating an array of services in thirty-one facilities for more than 2,200 individuals. These families were always thinking, planning, and working, and today ACHIEVE continues to live out its mission - As a chapter of NYSARC, Inc. it is the mission of ACHIEVE to advocate for an enhanced quality of life through skill advancement, inclusion, integration, and independence of persons with intellectual, developmental and other disabilities through services provided in Broome, Chenango and Tioga Counties.

🍂🎃 Rec Has Been Busy This Month! 🎃🍂

Some of our Rec participants have been making the most of this beautiful fall season with lots of fun, adventure, and festive memories! 🧡

They kicked off the month with a visit to the Oxford Oxtoberfest, followed by a scenic fall foliage train ride aboard the Cooperstown and Charlotte Valley Railroad. 🚂🍁 They enjoyed taking in the beautiful autumn colors and spending time together!

As Halloween approached, they joined in on the spooky fun at the Owego Halloween Festival and Zoo Boo at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse. 👻🦇 Everyone came dressed in their Halloween best, bringing plenty of festive spirit and smiles along the way! 🎃🕸️

From colorful fall views to Halloween adventures, it’s been a month full of community outings, friendship, and fun. We can’t wait to see what our Rec program gets up to next! 🧡🍂

🌟 Building Inclusive Communities Through Collaboration! 🌟

Earlier this year, ACHIEVE’s Broome County Community Prevocational program established a valuable partnership with the Roberson Museum and Science Center in Binghamton, and we’re excited to share the impact of this collaboration! 💙

Over two weeks in September, our team helped prepare for “It’s OK to Pause... The Art of Deb Koffman,” an exhibit celebrating the life and work of the late Binghamton-born artist and author. 🎨

This meaningful experience provided our participants with opportunities to express their creativity, practice following directions, and strengthen their teamwork skills while contributing to a special community project. Just as importantly, it demonstrated what’s possible when local organizations come together to create inclusive opportunities where everyone can participate, contribute, and thrive. 🤝

At ACHIEVE, we believe community partnerships are essential to building a more inclusive, connected, and welcoming community. Through collaborations like this, we continue to strengthen relationships with local organizations, expand opportunities for community participation, and showcase the valuable contributions individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities make throughout our region.

A heartfelt thank-you to the Roberson Museum and Science Center for welcoming our team and helping create an experience where inclusion, collaboration, and community impact came together. We’re proud to be part of a community that recognizes the value and potential in everyone! 💙

📍 County Spotlight: Chenango County

As we wrap up our County Spotlight series, we’re shining a light on ACHIEVE’s Community Habilitation program in Chenango County and the meaningful ways it helps individuals connect with and enjoy their community!

Chenango County is a wonderful example of how community connections, inclusion, and meaningful experiences can make a lasting impact. Our Community Habilitation participants enjoy spending time with friends, exploring local businesses, and taking part in activities that bring them joy. Whether it’s gathering for lunch with the “Lunch Bunch” before a trip to the library, getting active with a fun game of bowling, or visiting special local spots like Critz Farms earlier this month, there’s always an opportunity to make memories and try something new!

✨ At the heart of it all is the opportunity to be an active part of the community. These everyday experiences help build relationships, encourage independence, and create opportunities for individuals to explore their interests, strengthen their skills, and enjoy all that Chenango County has to offer.

We’re proud to support the people who call Chenango County home and grateful to be part of a community where everyone has the opportunity to participate, contribute, build connections, and thrive. ❤️

As we close out our County Spotlight series, we celebrate the incredible individuals, dedicated staff, and community partnerships that make ACHIEVE’s mission possible across the counties we serve. Together, we’re building stronger, more inclusive communities where everyone belongs!
