A memory popped into my mind this morning, and it made me realize how important that particular moment was in my life. I want to share this story with you.
When I was growing up, dancing was EVERYTHING to me. It gave me an outlet to express feelings that I didn't feel safe enough to verbalize. I dreamed of someday opening a dance studio of my own. I worked SO hard, and I poured my heart and soul into becoming the best dancer I could be.
At one point during my adolescent years, the teacher who had volunteered to be a sponsor / coach for our school dance team said she needed to have a private talk with me. I remember feeling so hopeful that she was going to tell me I had earned the position of Dance Team Captain. Instead, she told me that I was "dancing too good and making the other girls on the team look bad." She literally instructed me to stop putting so much energy and passion into my dance routines so that I wouldn't take the attention away from the other dancers.
I remember getting a sick feeling in my stomach, and I knew I had a VERY important choice to make. I ultimately chose to be true to myself. I decided to quit the school dance team, and start a Dance Club of my own, where I encouraged every person who joined to BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES and LET THEIR LIGHT SHINE!
THE WORDS YOU SPEAK TO OTHERS MATTER... especially if you are in a leadership position. That coach could have broken my Spirit and crushed my dream if I would have listened to her instructions and stopped trying my best. Thankfully, I decided to listen to MYSELF, and continued pursuing my passion. My Dance Club was a big success! We had tons of fun, and I organized an end of the year show where each of my students had a special moment in the spotlight.
I learned so much from coaching that Dance Club, and I used that experience as a stepping stone. I ended up making my dream come true, and I opened my own dance studio when I was 22 years old. From 1999 through 2017, I taught dance to thousands of students. More importantly, I taught those students to believe in themselves and follow their dreams!
I continue that same mission today through Miracles Wellness Center. My hope is that everyone I cross paths with feels uplifted and inspired. I want you to truly know your worth and never give anyone else the power to take away your sparkle!
I love you all,
