Herb Lore: Frankincense

There is a resin so ancient and so sacred that it has been carried to the altars of gods across cultures and continents for more than five thousand years. It is frankincense, and her story is one of the most extraordinary in all of Herb Lore.

She comes from a tree with papery, peeling bark, her resin harvested by hand and left to harden into small amber tears that carry one of the most transporting scents the natural world has ever produced. Her name comes from the Old French franc encens, true incense, pure incense. This was never an ordinary offering.

What moves me most about frankincense is how universally sacred she became among cultures that had no knowledge of one another. The Egyptians trusted her smoke to carry prayers to the divine. The Greeks and Romans offered her on their altars. In China and India she burns in temples as an aid to meditation. In Germany she was believed to scatter evil spirits. In medieval Europe she fumigated divinatory mirrors and marked ritual circles.

She is associated with Aphrodite, Apollo, Helios, Ra, and Venus. To burn frankincense was to signal that what was happening in that space was worthy of divine attention.

Magically she is called upon for clarity, protection, courage, focus, dream work, banishment, and blessing. She is a plant of the threshold, equally suited to the deepest ritual and the most grounded everyday practice.

She is frankincense, and her smoke has been rising toward the heavens for longer than any

I am out of town for a bit, soaking up a change of scenery and letting the plants of other places remind me why I love this work.

The apothecary is closed while I am away, but Mother Nature never takes a day off. Find her today, even if it is just a few minutes outside with your feet on the ground and your face in the sun.

I will be back soon. In the meantime, the online shop is open, and I am always just a DM away.

Your bath is about to become a ritual.

Steep and Soak: A Botanical Bath Workshop is coming up Wednesday, August 19th from 6 to 8pm right here at the apothecary, and I would love for you to be there.

For as long as humans have gathered around water, plants have been part of it. This make-and-take evening we slow down, reconnect with that tradition, and make something beautiful to take home. You will blend your own bath tea sachets filled with botanicals of your choosing and a small jar of herbal soaking salts, all while sipping tea and learning about the history and folklore of ritual bathing across folk traditions.

No experience needed. All materials provided. Ages 18 and up. Come solo or bring a friend.

Tickets are $34.

What would it feel like to have someone genuinely in your corner?

Not just a plan or a program, but a real conversation about where you are and where you want to go. Someone who listens, asks the hard questions, and helps you build a self-care practice that actually fits your life.

That is holistic coaching with me. We start where you are. We move at a pace that works for you. And we weave in the plants and practices that support you along the way.

I offer short term, weekly, and monthly coaching support because everyone's needs look a little different, and yours deserve to be met where they are.

We can meet here, or virtually. You choose what feels best.

If you have been sitting on the idea of getting some support, this is your sign. Book a coplimentary discovery call through the link in bio or send me a DM. I would love to connect.

Nature is not a luxury.
It is the oldest medicine there is.

Step outside today, even for just a few minutes. Your nervous system will thank you.

And if you are feeling called to go deeper into your wellness journey, I am here. Send me a DM or book a discovery call through the link in bio.

Tonight was 'Apothecary After Dark', and in addition to sipping tea and chatting, we pulled cards.

Two people, at two different times, pulled this one. It felt so serendipitous, I wanted to share it here. Perhaps there is a message in this card for you as well.

Both individuals told me they had been taking time to nurture themselves lately, discovering new hobbies and spending time in nature.

It is a theme that not only thrills me but one I often recommend to clients.

The next 'Apothecary After Dark' will be in September. And if the weather is good, we will spill out onto the porch for tea, connection, and a little fun. I hope you'll join me.

Chicago, this one is for you.

On August 4th, I am bringing my Herbal Incense Crafting workshop to the incredible Malliway Brothers, and I would love to spend an evening with you and the plants.

We will explore the history and folklore behind some of the most beloved aromatic herbs, talk about the ancient art of smoke and what it has meant to people across cultures, and then get our hands into the botanicals and craft our own personalized incense cones to take home.

No experience needed. Just curiosity, good company, and a love of all things herbal and aromatic.

This is a small group experience, so space is limited. Head to the link in bio to reserve your spot or find out more.

I can't wait to see you there

If you've been to the apothecary or a class you may have met our goofy girl Reba.

She joined our family last December and is the sweetest girl ever.

She's entered into a fundraiser to benefit the Texas Great Pyrenees Rescue where she was adopted from.

Cast a vote for her and helps save dogs.

And that's a wrap for our summer adventures in the PNW.

We spent nearly all of it visiting family and taking in the scenery.

There are so many more things on my list to see and do out there.

Next time...

Until then, nothing but great memories from a marvelous trip.
