As temperatures climb across Rockingham County, take steps now to protect yourself and your family from heat-related illness.

☀️ Drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty.

☀️ Limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.

☀️ Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning.

☀️ Never leave children, older adults, or pets unattended in a vehicle — even for a few minutes.

☀️ Check on elderly neighbors, family members, and anyone who may be vulnerable to the heat.

Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If someone becomes confused, loses consciousness, or stops sweating in extreme heat, call 911 immediately.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay weather aware. 🚑🌡️

⚠️ A Code Orange Air Quality Alert has been issued for Rockingham County and surrounding areas on Friday, June 5.

With temperatures in the 90s under sunny skies and little wind, higher levels of ground-level ozone are forecast to develop, which can be dangerous for some people.

Those most likely to be affected include:
• Children and teens
• Older adults
• People with heart or lung conditions
• Anyone spending a lot of time working or exercising outdoors

If you are in one of these groups, consider limiting strenuous outdoor activities and taking extra breaks throughout the day.

You can also help improve air quality by:
• Driving less when possible
• Avoiding unnecessary idling
• Waiting to use gas-powered lawn equipment until air quality improves

Residents are also encouraged to postpone any open burning until the alert has ended, as smoke can contribute to poor air quality.

As we recognize Hurricane Preparedness Week, it’s important to remember that hurricanes and tropical systems don’t just impact coastal communities. Here in central North Carolina, the effects can still be significant long after a storm makes landfall.

Heavy rainfall, flash flooding, downed trees, power outages, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes are all possible impacts from tropical systems moving inland. In recent years, North Carolina communities far from the coast have experienced serious flooding and storm damage from hurricanes and tropical weather.

Preparedness matters for every community. Taking time now to prepare can make a major difference before severe weather arrives.

Here are a few simple ways to get ready:
• Review your emergency plans with your family
• Build or restock your emergency supply kit
• Know multiple ways to receive weather alerts and emergency information
• Charge devices ahead of storms and keep backup batteries available
• Never drive through flooded roadways — Turn Around, Don’t Drown
• Check on neighbors, older adults and those who may need additional assistance

Disasters can happen at any time, and preparation is one of the best ways to protect your family, property and community. Whether it’s a hurricane, severe thunderstorm, winter weather event or other emergency, having a plan in place is always important.

👉FIRE DANGER STILL HIGH FOR CENTRAL NC -- JAN. 16, 2026 – POSTPONE OUTDOOR BURNING👈

Due to low relative humidity, dry fuels and windy conditions, fire danger remains high across central North Carolina. Outdoor burning is NOT recommended. Dry grasses, dead leaves and other vegetative debris could easily ignite and spread quickly.

Discard cigarette butts, matches and other flammable materials in appropriate containers. Use extreme caution when handling potential ignition sources such as machinery and farm equipment.

Spread prevention, not wildfire.

🎯Contact your local NCFS county ranger before burning outdoors. https://bit.ly/3lpoWR0
