Recovery is about more than healing—it's about restoring confidence, independence, and hope.
When Shawn arrived at Montowese Center for Health & Rehabilitation, he was facing one of the most difficult times of his life. After developing a severe leg infection, he required long-term IV antibiotics and was confronted with the possibility of amputation. Unsure of what the future would hold, Shawn was initially hesitant about rehabilitation and even questioned whether he should stay at the center.
With encouragement from the Montowese team, Shawn committed to his recovery. Through physical and occupational therapy, he gradually rebuilt his strength, confidence, and independence. Although his infection continued to progress despite extensive treatment, Shawn underwent a lower extremity amputation in March 2026. Rather than letting that define him, he embraced the challenge and worked tirelessly toward his goals.
Throughout his stay, Shawn found more than exceptional clinical care—he found a community. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the nurses, therapists, CNAs, and the entire interdisciplinary team who listened, encouraged him, and celebrated every milestone along the way. He also formed meaningful friendships with fellow residents that made his recovery even more special.
Today, Shawn is returning home to a new apartment secured through the support of Root Center for Advanced Recovery, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter filled with renewed independence and opportunity.
Shawn's journey is a powerful reminder of what can happen when resilience meets compassionate, person-centered care.
Congratulations, Shawn! Thank you to the dedicated team at Montowese Center for Health & Rehabilitation for helping make this milestone possible. We wish Shawn continued health, happiness, and success in the journey ahead.
