What you see is a nose that has a deviated septum, mild enlargement of turbinates, and nasal valve collapse.
I refer to an ENT when someone has symptoms of possible airway restriction or obstruction because it is very important to know if obstruction is present.
Myofunctional therapy is a WONDERFUL adjunct to any surgical recommendations, nasal breathing re-training, and CPAP or other sleep apnea treatments.
This particular case could benefit from surgery--correcting the septum, reducing turbinates, and rhinoplasty to reconstruct tissues that collapse.
But what if a person isn't ready for surgery yet? What can be helpful?
I recommend a couple things. I like Xlear nasal products, and really like nasal dilators. I am particular to Mute (and no, I am not getting paid). I found them about 4 years ago, and sleep with it every night, and when I am doing a stronger activity.
In these pictures, you can see how the dilator helps to gently prop open the nostrils so that there is less restriction of airflow. It can make a significant difference in how much air you feel you can get.
This isn't what I mean by nasal breathing re-training, but this is something that can start helping get comfortable with better nasal breathing.
Screenings are free.
