We had a wonderful virtual Colloquium this week with the Howard University music therapy program, lead by Niambi Powell and Shana Oshiro, founding members of Halo Quartet. They presented the Race & metaphor and lead discussions with students from both programs.

Congratulations to SU alum Dr Kerry Devlin, MT-BC, who presented a concurrent session (presenting, and 2nd from left) and research poster at theAnnual meeting of the Neurocritical Care Society in California this week. Music therapy is increasingly integrated into critical care environments as part of standard care and it's great to see Kerry's research and clinical practice advancing practice in this area.

Congratulations to SU music therapy alum Chloe Heintz, MMT, MT-BC, for their publication in Neonatology Today. Chloe completed her research study on elective circumcision and pain management in the NICU.

Congratulations to our 2026 graduating class on achieving a 100% music therapy internship placement rate! We are so proud of each of you and all the hard work you’ve put in to reach this exciting milestone. We can’t wait to see all the amazing things you accomplish as you begin the next chapter of your music therapy journeys!

It is with bittersweetness that we are announcing Dr. Tony Meadows’ upcoming retirement at the end of Summer 2027.

We’re so sad to see him shift out of his role as the Director of the SU Music Therapy Department: We will miss him very much and are so thankful for the generous, meaningful, and countless ways he has contributed to the music therapy programs and our SU music therapy teaching and learning community as a whole - not to mention the SU Conservatory and beyond.

We’re also so excited and happy for him as he will move to Milwaukee, WI to spend more time with his wife and enjoy more spaciousness for continuing music therapy research. We are also glad and grateful that he will be staying connected to the SU music therapy program - at the very least by continuing to teach in the Master’s of Music Therapy program.

More updates to follow, and, in the meantime: Congratulations on your upcoming retirement, Dr. Meadows! We will miss you and are so very happy for you!

Congratulations to Laura Parra Acosta, a student in our Master of Music Therapy program, on being awarded the 2026 Rhonda Lineburg Rinker Scholarship. The scholarship was created in memory or Rhonda Rinker, a pioneer in the field who lived in the Richmond area and dedicated her life to music therapy, including a developing longstanding internship program. Congratulations Laura!

🎶 Welcome back, Shenandoah Music Therapy Students and Faculty! 🎶

It’s been a busy and exciting first week back for our Music Therapy students and faculty! From celebrating the start of a new academic year at Conservatory Convocation to unboxing new instruments for our Music Therapy Clinic, we’re already off to a great start!

Thanks to a generous gift from the Mason family, our Music Therapy Clinic received brand-new instruments to support our students and enhance the experiences we provide to our clients. We can’t wait to see these instruments in action throughout the year!

Here’s to a new semester filled with learning, music, growth, and plenty of exciting opportunities. We’re so glad to have everyone back!
