Endometriosis carries a real economic cost for women in the United States.
U.S. research has found that women with endometriosis experience significantly greater work loss, absenteeism, short-term disability, and healthcare costs compared with women without the condition. In one large U.S. analysis, women with endometriosis averaged more missed work days and higher indirect costs related to lost productivity.

Another U.S. study found that women with endometriosis lost an average of 5.3 hours of work productivity per week due to presenteeism, in addition to time lost from work entirely. Productivity losses increased substantially as symptoms became more severe.

At AIMIS, these findings reinforce an important point: endometriosis is not only a clinical issue—it can affect careers, productivity, financial well-being, and quality of life.

Better recognition, earlier diagnosis, continued physician education, and access to effective treatment can make a meaningful difference.

Why Are Women Still Waiting Years for an Endometriosis Diagnosis?

For millions living with endometriosis, one of the greatest challenges isn’t only managing the disease—it’s getting a diagnosis in the first place.

New international research involving the University of Sheffield is examining why women e with endometriosis can wait an estimated 7 to 12 years for a diagnosis and, importantly, where patients may be getting “lost or let down” along that journey.

The project brings together researchers, clinicians, and people with lived experience to develop a standardized framework for understanding the endometriosis diagnostic pathway and identifying where meaningful interventions could help reduce delays.

At AIMIS, this is exactly why continued physician education and collaboration matter.
Recognizing symptoms earlier, understanding evolving diagnostic approaches, sharing clinical knowledge, and keeping healthcare professionals informed about advances in women’s health can all contribute to moving care forward.

We are honored to announce Sean C. Blackwell, MD, MBA, as the Keynote Speaker for AIMIS’ upcoming Best Practice for Challenges in Women’s Healthcare event on October 9, 2026, in Houston, Texas.

Dr. Blackwell is a board-certified, fellowship-trained maternal-fetal medicine specialist and an internationally recognized leader in women’s health. He serves in multiple leadership roles at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, including Chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences.

His extensive clinical, academic, research, and leadership experience has helped advance maternal-fetal medicine and women’s healthcare, including the development and expansion of major programs such as the UTHealth Houston Fetal Center and Placenta Accreta Program.
