Dr. Dorante discusses how restoring nerves during reconstructive breast surgery. 💗

Mastectomy divides the nerves in the chest, often times leading to a decrease in sensation. Reconstruction restores form, but on its own it does not restore feeling. Resensation®, offered at FPS in partnership with Axogen, uses Avance®, an FDA-approved nerve graft, to repair those nerves during breast reconstruction or revision surgery.

Timing matters here. Because the nerve repair happens during surgery, it cannot be added to a reconstruction that has already healed. If reconstruction is still ahead of you, this is the time to ask.

Implants add volume. A lift changes position. Most patients come in asking about one when what is actually bothering them is the other. 💙

This patient had a breast augmentation with a lift, using Allergan Natrelle silicone gel implants. Swipe for the before and after. ➡️

Here is the distinction that matters. If your concern is fullness, especially across the upper part of the breast, that is a volume question and an implant answers it. If your concern is where things sit, or that your breasts look deflated after pregnancy, nursing, or weight change, volume alone will not fix it. Adding an implant to breast tissue that has descended often just makes a lower breast a larger one. ✨

Combining the two addresses both in a single operation with a single recovery, which is why it is one of the most common pairings our surgeons perform.

Which one you need, or whether you need both, comes down to your anatomy and your goals. That is what a consultation is for. Results vary from patient to patient. 🩺

What is Pink with Purpose? 🎀

It is our annual breast cancer fundraiser, and this October marks the fifth year.

Here is what your $5 ticket actually does. 100% of proceeds go to Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center Foundation's Think Pink Fund, which pays for 3D mammograms for women in our community who are uninsured or underinsured. The fund says it plainly: no more excuses, just more mammograms. 💗

This one is personal for us. Our surgeons care for breast cancer patients through mastectomy and reconstruction, so we see firsthand what catching it early changes. 💙

Numbness. Lingering nerve pain. Changes in shape or symmetry. The look of a breast without a ni**le.

These are some of the changes women tell us are hardest to live with after breast surgery. They are also some of the least talked about.

This fall, we are proud to offer four new ways to help. Swipe through. ➡️

✔ Resensation® restores feeling after mastectomy. Offered in partnership with Axogen, it uses Avance®, an FDA-approved nerve graft, to repair the nerves divided during mastectomy. Performed during reconstruction or revision surgery. 🧠

✔ Post-mastectomy nerve pain treatment addresses the burning, shooting, or aching that can linger in the chest wall, armpit, or upper arm for months or even years. Often dismissed as something you simply have to live with. It can be treated at the source.

✔ alloClae® is non-surgical contouring made from donated human fat tissue. It adds natural-looking volume to smooth implant rippling, refine contour, and improve symmetry. In office, usually under an hour, with most patients back to normal activity within 24 to 48 hours.

✔ 3D ni**le and ar**la tattooing with Kinsley Nix, L.M.E. Careful shading and color matching that creates the appearance of natural depth and dimension, with no additional surgery. ✨

Resensation® and nerve pain treatment are led by Dr. Miguel Dorante, who joined us in September after completing a fellowship in peripheral nerve surgery at the Neuropax Clinic in St. Louis.

One thing worth knowing early: because the nerve repair happens during surgery, Resensation® is best planned before your reconstruction. Nerve pain, on the other hand, can be evaluated at any point after surgery.
