Parents, are we keeping our kids hands busy? Have you noticed how quietly convenience has taken over our kids’ daily lives? Between velcro sneakers, squeeze pouches, and pre-sliced snacks, the small, awkward tasks that used to naturally build a child’s hand strength are slowly disappearing.
As a pediatric occupational therapist, I see the ripple effect of this every day. Our kids are brighter and more creative than ever, but when they sit down in a classroom, their hands are physically struggling. Recent studies show that over 75% of early childhood teachers report that simple fine motor tasks—like holding a pencil correctly, using scissors, or tying shoes—have become significantly harder for young students over the past few years.
It’s not because kids aren’t trying, and it’s certainly not a failure on the part of parents. Life has just gotten easier and more automated, which means the “accidental workout” children used to get during daily play has quietly vanished. A child’s hand strength isn’t something they are born with; it’s built over time through thousands of real-world interactions—climbing, pulling, pinching, and working through tactile resistance.
This is the heart of why we created Farm & Forest Explorers. When kids step onto the farm, we don’t hand them tracing worksheets or plastic tools. Instead, their hands go to work naturally. They are latching heavy farm gates, grooming and brushing horses, scrambling over fallen logs, building animal enrichments, and digging in real soil. Without even realizing it, they are gaining the deep grip strength, core stability, and motor coordination their growing bodies need.
If you’d like to give your child the space to build real-world strength through pure outdoor play, come test out the farm experience at one of our upcoming Fall Previews on Wednesday, November 11th or Wednesday, December 16th (9:30 AM – 12:00 PM).
Spring registration for ages 6–12 and Teens is officially open at Spring Acres in Chuluota, FL, and we are a direct Step Up for Students provider. You can reserve your child’s spot anytime at CommunOTfarm.as.me. Let’s give their hands something real to hold!
