We're excited to introduce summer themes at our clinics!☀️

June's clinic theme is Camping and Critters! ⛺🐞✨

This month is all about fun camping and critter-themed activities. There is so much in store, but some fun activities children may see include fishing games, bug hunts with mini flashlights, play dough critters, light-up fireflies, and more!

And don't forget...our ice cream theme will also be featured all summer long!🍦

The best part? These activities are fun and engaging while still supporting each child’s individual therapy goals.

We're so excited for a fun summer at the clinic and can't wait to share more!

As National Speech-Language-Hearing Month comes to a close, we want to take a moment to celebrate all of the amazing therapists and families at our clinic.

This month, we shared and recognized the impact of speech therapy, early communication, speech clarity, hearing, language development, and the many ways children build communication and language skills through play, practice, and support.

Most of all, we want to thank our amazing team of SLPs and audiologists for the care, patience, creativity, and expertise they bring every day! Thank you for all that you do, and we hope you had a wonderful National Speech-Language-Hearing Month!

Hearing plays an important role in speech and language development.

Children learn speech sounds, words, directions, and social communication through the sounds they hear every day. When hearing concerns are present, they can sometimes show up as speech delays, difficulty following directions, attention concerns, or frustration with communication.

If you have concerns about your child’s hearing, speech, or language development, call our Wooster clinic to ask about next steps.

Did you know that SLPs provide feeding therapy?

Feeding therapy helps children who struggle with eating, specifically addressing things like gagging on textures, refusing new foods, poor chewing, or trouble swallowing safely. Feeding therapy addresses these challenges that can impact growth, nuturition, and family mealtimes.

SLPs specialize in the oral motor (mouth) aspects of feeding.
This could look like:
-strenghtening lips, tongue, jaw for sucking, biting, chewing
-Coordinating swallows so kids eat safely without choking
-Desensitizing mouths to textures(purees to crunchy foods)
-Building confidence to try new tastes and self-feed

Did you know that both an OT or SLP can provide feeding therapy? SlPs focus on oral-motor and swallowing, while OTs may work more on body positioning, sensory processing, and motor planning during meals. Many kids benefit from both!

Reading challenges can be frustrating for children and families, especially when a child is trying hard and still struggling with reading, spelling, or sounding out words.
Dyslexia is a language-based learning difference that can affect how the brain processes written language. Children with dyslexia may have difficulty with skills like sound awareness, decoding, word recognition, spelling, reading fluency, and comprehension.

Support often works best when it is structured, systematic, and multisensory. This means children are taught in a way that uses visual, auditory, and hands-on learning together. Programs such as the Wilson Reading System are designed to support students who need more intensive reading intervention.

At EJ, families can call to ask about dyslexia support and whether services may be appropriate for their child’s needs.
Call us to ask about next steps.

Speech and listening skills can be built during everyday play.

Simple strategies like narrating what your child is doing, offering choices, pausing to give them time to respond, repeating key words, and following their lead can help create more opportunities for communication.

You do not need a perfect activity or expensive toy. Often, the best learning happens during simple moments your child already enjoys.😊

If you have concerns about your child’s speech, language, or listening skills, call us to ask about speech therapy and if it's right for your child. ⭐

Did you know that communication development starts long before a child says their first word? Before kids talk, they communicate through eye contact, joint attention (looking at something and then back at you), gestures like pointing and reaching, and social smiling. These early skills are actually the foundation that language builds on. Understanding these building blocks can help parents and caregivers recognize what's on track and what might be worth a conversation with a speech-language pathologist.
