Here are a few important things to remember:

🤍 If the death is unnatural or the cause is uncertain
A medico-legal investigation may be required, including a post-mortem examination. The deceased may need to remain at a state medico-legal mortuary until the appropriate release process has been completed. Government of South Africa

🤍 If the death is from natural causes
The process will depend on where the person passed away and the circumstances. Relevant medical professionals and the funeral undertaker can help with the documentation required to register the death. The DHA-1663 Notice of Death forms part of South Africa's official death-registration process. Government of South Africa

🤍 If there is a funeral policy
Understand what your policy provides before making arrangements. South Africa's funeral-policy rules allow policy benefits to be paid as money or a funeral service of equivalent value, and the policyholder or member can choose between the two without an additional fee or penalty. FSCA

Most importantly, ask questions before making decisions. Know who you are dealing with, understand the process and make sure you are comfortable with the funeral service provider assisting your family.
