What Is the Heart Really Searching For?
We spend so much of our lives reacting to people's behaviour.
But what if, instead of asking,
"What's wrong with them?"
we gently asked,
"What is this heart searching for?"
Sometimes what appears as anger is a heart searching for security.
Sometimes what appears as control is a heart trying to create safety after experiencing uncertainty.
Sometimes what appears as emotional dependence is a heart longing to belong.
Sometimes what appears as perfectionism is a heart afraid that mistakes will lead to rejection.
Sometimes what appears as people-pleasing is a heart searching for acceptance.
Sometimes what appears as withdrawal is a heart protecting itself from further pain.
Sometimes what appears as stubbornness is a heart resisting surrender.
Sometimes what appears as constant busyness is a heart trying to outrun its own emptiness.
Sometimes what appears as addiction is a heart searching for relief in places that can never truly satisfy it.
None of this excuses harmful behaviour.
We are each responsible for our choices.
But when we begin to understand the longing beneath the behaviour, judgment often gives way to compassion, without removing accountability.
The Qur'an invites us to look even deeper.
"Whoever turns away from the remembrance of the Most Merciful, We appoint for them a constant companion..." (Qur'an 43:36)
One way to reflect on this verse is that when the heart forgets the Creator, it begins searching for another "enough."
It may search in people.
In relationships.
In achievement.
In control.
In approval.
In distractions.
In possessions.
In temporary comforts.
Then we become attached, not because attachment is the same as love, but because the heart is trying to fill a space that only the Creator can fill.
The journey of inner purification is gently noticing where the heart has placed its ultimate trust, identity, and security, and returning it to the Lord, again and again.
Because every heart is always orbiting around something.
Peace begins when it learns to orbit around the One who has always been enough.
