What does an allergy doctor actually do? 🌼
Many people live with itchy skin, a blocked nose or a tight chest for years without knowing what is behind it. An allergy doctor works out the cause and builds a plan around you.
✔️ Finds the trigger. Skin prick and blood tests show what you are really allergic to, and what you are not.
✔️ Treats the whole picture. Asthma, hay fever, eczema, hives, food, drug and bee sting allergies, in children and adults.
✔️ Changes the course. Immunotherapy is the only treatment that can build lasting tolerance to an allergen.
✔️ Gives you a plan. You learn when to step treatment up or down, so symptoms stop running your day.
Using your reliever inhaler more than three times a week? That is a sign your asthma is not under control, and it is worth a conversation.

🌬️ ASTHMA MYTHS: Let’s Set the Record Straight!
There are many misconceptions about asthma treatment. Understanding the facts can help you or your child breathe easier and manage asthma more effectively.
🔴 MYTH 1: “Inhaled steroids will make my lungs weak.”
✅ FACT: Inhaled corticosteroids reduce inflammation in the airways, improve asthma control and help prevent flare-ups. They are an important part of asthma management when prescribed appropriately.
🔴 MYTH 2: “A nebuliser works better than an inhaler.”
✅ FACT: A metered-dose inhaler (pump) used correctly with a spacer can deliver medication very effectively and works better than a nebuliser for many asthma attacks. MDI with spacer is advised. The right device and technique matter!
🔴 MYTH 3: “All children outgrow asthma.”
✅ FACT: Some children experience fewer symptoms as they grow older, but asthma can continue into adulthood. Ongoing assessment and appropriate treatment are important, even when symptoms improve.
💡 Remember: Good asthma management is about more than treating symptoms. Correct inhaler technique, appropriate anti-inflammatory treatment and regular reviews can make a real difference.

🔎 ALLERGY MYTHS: Let’s Set the Record Straight!
Did you know that shellfish allergy does not automatically mean you are allergic to iodine? 🦐
Let’s clear up 3 common allergy myths!
❌ MYTH 1: Shellfish allergy means iodine allergy.
✅ FACT: Shellfish allergy is a reaction to proteins in shellfish — not iodine.
❌ MYTH 2: If I have a shellfish allergy, I will react to CT contrast dye.
✅ FACT: Shellfish allergy does not create a special risk of reacting to iodinated contrast. Your healthcare team will assess your individual allergy and medical history.
❌ MYTH 3: A rash after using an iodine-containing antiseptic proves iodine allergy.
✅ FACT: Antiseptics can cause skin irritation or allergic contact dermatitis. A rash needs proper assessment to identify the cause.
💡 The important message:
Having an allergy does not automatically mean you are allergic to other substances that sound similar or contain the same element. Correct diagnosis helps prevent unnecessary avoidance, anxiety and delays in medical care.

🧬 HOW DOES AN ALLERGY DEVELOP — AND WHY CAN IT KEEP HAPPENING?
Have you ever wondered why a person can suddenly develop an allergy to peanuts or house dust mites?
It starts with a process called SENSITISATION.
🥜 STEP 1: SENSITISATION
After exposure to an allergen, such as peanut protein or house dust mite, the immune system may start producing IgE antibodies against that allergen.
This process is called sensitisation. It can develop over time, and not everyone who becomes sensitised will develop symptoms.
⚠️ STEP 2: THE ALLERGIC REACTION
Once a person has developed an IgE-mediated allergy, re-exposure can trigger a reaction within minutes — sometimes after exposure to a very small amount.
The IgE antibodies activate immune cells called mast cells, which release histamine and other inflammatory chemicals.
This can cause symptoms such as itching, swelling, sneezing, a blocked nose, wheezing or, in severe cases, anaphylaxis.
🥜 FOOD ALLERGY: YOU CAN AVOID EATING THE FOOD
If you have a confirmed peanut allergy, avoiding peanut is essential.
But be careful! Foods can sometimes contain unexpected peanut ingredients or traces, so checking labels and following your allergy management plan are important.
🛏️ HOUSE DUST MITE ALLERGY: A DIFFERENT CHALLENGE
House dust mites are microscopic organisms commonly found in bedding, mattresses and soft furnishings.
If you are allergic to house dust mites, exposure in your bedroom may continue for hours while you sleep.
Ongoing exposure can contribute to symptoms such as:
🤧 Sneezing and a blocked nose when you wake up
👃 Nasal itching and a runny nose
🫁 Coughing, wheezing or chest tightness in people with asthma
Unlike a food allergen, house dust mite allergen is difficult to avoid completely because you still need to breathe the air around you.
🔬 WHY ALLERGY TESTING MATTERS
Knowing your triggers helps you make informed decisions.
✅ Food allergies: Identify confirmed food triggers and learn how to avoid accidental exposure.
✅ Inhalant allergies: Identify triggers such as house dust mites, moulds, grasses and tree pollens so that exposure can be reduced where practical.
✅ Asthma and hay fever: Understanding your triggers can help guide an appropriate treatment and prevention plan.
💙 DON'T JUST TREAT THE SYMPTOMS — UNDERSTAND YOUR TRIGGERS.
Allergy testing should always be interpreted alongside your symptoms and medical history. A positive test alone does not necessarily mean you have a clinical allergy.

🥚 PICTURE 1 — Egg Allergy
🥚 WHAT IS EGG ALLERGY?
Egg allergy is an immune reaction to egg proteins and is most common in young children.
👶 Children with severe or difficult-to-control exacerbation of existing eczema are more likely to have egg allergy.
Symptoms may include:
🤧 Hives & swelling
🤮 Vomiting
🫁 Breathing problems
💨 Asthma symptoms
🚨 Severe reactions can cause anaphylaxis.
🔬 Testing matters: Your doctor will consider the reaction history and may recommend blood or skin-prick testing.
👨‍⚕️ Suspect an egg allergy? Speak to an allergy doctor.

🥚 PICTURE 2 — Baked Egg
🥚 CAN A CHILD WITH EGG ALLERGY EAT BAKED EGG?
Sometimes, yes!
🔥 Some children who react to cooked egg can tolerate well-baked egg, such as:
🍪 Biscuits
🧁 Cupcakes

Cooking egg at a high temperature can change the proteins and make them less likely to cause a reaction in some children.
⚠️ But not every child can safely eat baked egg.
Always discuss baked egg introduction with an allergy doctor.

🥚 Egg Allergy in Childhood: What Parents Should Know
Egg allergy is an immune reaction to proteins in egg and is particularly common in young children. Children with severe or difficult-to-control eczema are more likely to have egg allergy.
🔹 Anaphylaxis is possible — but rare
Egg allergy can cause reactions ranging from hives, swelling and vomiting to breathing difficulty. Anaphylaxis is possible, but fortunately rare.
🔹 Avoid unnecessary restriction
Unnecessary avoidance of egg can contribute to nutritional deficiencies and malnutrition, particularly in growing children. This is why accurate assessment and appropriate testing are important.
🔬 Test the different egg proteins
Testing individual egg proteins can help guide management. Ovomucoid testing is particularly important when assessing whether a child may tolerate baked or heated egg.
🥚 When ovomucoid is positive
Where ovomucoid is positive, total egg avoidance may be required initially, followed by regular reassessment and re-testing.
📈 The goal: introduce tolerance when it is safe
As testing and clinical assessment allow, an egg ladder may be used to gradually introduce egg and support the development of tolerance.
👩‍⚕️ Specialist guidance is important
Egg allergy management should be individualised and guided by an Allergy Specialist together with a dietician trained in food allergy management. This helps balance allergy safety with adequate nutrition and avoid unnecessary dietary restriction.

🥚 Egg Allergy & the Egg Ladder — A Step-by-Step Approach
For some children with egg allergy, tolerance can develop gradually, and the way egg is prepared can make a difference.
🧪 Testing the different egg proteins is an important part of the assessment. Understanding which egg proteins a child reacts to can help guide appropriate management.
🥚 An egg ladder may be used in selected children to gradually progress from well-baked egg to more lightly cooked egg, when medically appropriate.
👩‍⚕️ Professional guidance from an Allergy Doctor and Dietician is really important.
A personalised approach may include:
✔️ Testing different egg proteins
✔️ Assessing the child's individual allergy history
✔️ Choosing the appropriate starting point on the egg ladder
✔️ Gradually progressing when appropriate
✔️ Monitoring for allergic reactions
✔️ Ensuring adequate nutrition while managing the allergy
🥗 A dietician can help ensure that avoiding egg or other foods does not unnecessarily restrict the child's diet or result in nutritional deficiencies.
The goal is not simply to avoid egg. The goal is to understand the allergy and safely determine what the child can tolerate.

🌸 CHANGE OF SEASON = MORE ALLERGY & SINUS PROBLEMS?
As the seasons change, pollen levels and other environmental triggers can increase, causing problems for people with allergies.
🤧 Common symptoms include:
• Sneezing
• Runny or blocked nose
• Itchy nose and throat
• Watery, itchy eyes
• Post-nasal drip
• Sinus pressure or facial discomfort
• Coughing
🌿 Is it a “sinus infection” or an allergy?
Allergies can cause swelling and inflammation inside the nose, leading to congestion and sinus pressure. This can feel like a sinus infection — but antibiotics are not the treatment for an allergy.
💡 What can help?
✅ Saline nasal rinses/sprays to clear allergens and mucus
✅ Correct use of an intranasal corticosteroid when prescribed
✅ A non-sedating antihistamine when appropriate
✅ Identify your allergy triggers
✅ Keep windows closed when pollen levels are high
✅ Shower and change clothes after spending time outdoors
If symptoms keep returning with the change of season, consider an allergy assessment rather than simply treating each episode as a sinus infection.
