Crazy Socks 4 Docs is an initiative that encourages people to wear colourful, mismatched, or unusual socks to start conversations about mental health in the medical profession. T

he campaign aims to raise awareness of the often unseen challenges faced by doctors, including depression, anxiety, burnout, and other mental health concerns.

By wearing crazy socks, we show support for healthcare professionals and help reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness, reminding doctors that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

In light of World Hypertension Day, we remind you that high blood pressure is silent until it is dangerously high. It is associated with complications like heart attacks, strokes, erectile dysfunction, kidney disease and blindness. Danger signs include headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, chest pain and limb weakness.
Remember to ask your doctor to check your blood pressure at every visit and take your health into your own hands.

Hantavirus update

- As of May 13, 2026, there are no locally acquired cases of hantavirus in South Africa, but officials are monitoring 97 potential contacts following a travel-related outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship which departed from Argentina.
- A Dutch passenger has died, and a British man is receiving treatment in Johannesburg.
- While the Andes strain involved can spread between humans, the NICD confirms no local transmission within South Africa, and the risk to the public remains very low.
- A person in the Western Cape with symptoms who was on the same flight as the deceased patient tested negative for the virus.
- The Department of Health advises against panic, highlighting that the incident is contained to individuals associated with the specific travel incident.

Hantavirus is not the "new COVID", and poses a very low risk to the South African public. There is no need to panic about its incidence at this time.

HANTAVIRUS: WHAT SOUTH AFRICANS SHOULD KNOW

There has recently been increased international attention around Hantavirus following cases linked to an overseas cruise ship outbreak, including one patient receiving treatment in South Africa. While the news may sound alarming, health authorities including the World Health Organization (WHO) and South African Department of Health have stressed that the risk to the general public remains LOW.

🦠 What is Hantavirus?
Hantavirus is a rare viral infection usually spread through contact with infected rodents, particularly their urine, droppings, or saliva. People most commonly become infected by breathing in contaminated dust particles in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces.

❗ Importantly:
• It is NOT spread casually like a cold or flu.
• Human-to-human spread is extremely rare and has only been linked to specific strains in South America, especially Argentina.
• There is currently NO evidence of community spread in South Africa.

👀 Symptoms to watch for:
Early symptoms can resemble flu and may include:
• Fever
• Fatigue
• Muscle aches
• Headache
• Nausea or vomiting

In more serious cases, people may develop:
• Shortness of breath
• Chest tightness
• Difficulty breathing

Symptoms usually develop 1–8 weeks after exposure.

🏡 How can you reduce risk?
✔️ Avoid contact with rodents and their droppings
✔️ Wear gloves and a mask when cleaning dusty storerooms, sheds, garages, or cabins
✔️ Ventilate enclosed spaces before sweeping or cleaning
✔️ Store food securely and maintain good household hygiene

🩺 When should you seek medical help?
If you develop severe flu-like symptoms, consult a healthcare professional promptly, regardless of the risk or Hantavirus. Other viruses can also be dangerous.

At this stage, South African health authorities are actively monitoring the situation, and there is no need for panic. Staying informed and practicing good hygiene remains the best approach.
