Please be aware there has been an increase in rabies cases over the last few weeks in the Durban area. Most recently, a frail, unwell stray dog was brought into Hillcrest Veterinary Hospital last week and was confirmed positive for the virus. He had none of the classic rabid characteristics typical of rabies.

This serves as an important reminder that rabies does not always look the way people expect it to. It remains one of the few diseases that is fatal once clinical signs develop, yet it is also entirely preventable through routine vaccination. Every unvaccinated pet is a risk.

Protect your pets, your family and your community by ensuring your dogs and cats are vaccinated and that their vaccinations remain up to date.

To support responsible pet ownership and improve community protection, Hillcrest Veterinary Hospital will be hosting a Rabies Vaccination Drive on 5 July 2026.
