🐾 Patient of the Month: Tofu 🐾

Tofu is a brave 5‑month‑old kitten who was admitted to ICU with a pyothorax - a serious condition where pus builds up in the pleural space, placing pressure on the lungs and making breathing difficult.

She received intensive care with us for one week, including having a chest drain placed to remove and flush the accumulating pus.

Tofu was incredibly tough, and she showed improvement each day.
We’re happy to share that she is now back home and doing well! 💛

Let's Talk: Chronic Ear Infections in Dogs
With Dr. Quinton Van Oudtshoorn

A Practical Guide for Dog Owners
Ear infections (otitis externa) are one of the most common reasons dogs visit the vet. While they may start as mild irritation, they can quickly become painful and complicated if not treated properly.
This guide explains what causes ear infections, how to recognise them, and why early treatment is important.

What Is Otitis Externa?
“Otitis” means inflammation of the ear.
“Externa” refers to the external ear canal — the part you can see and the canal leading down to the eardrum. If untreated, infection can spread deeper into the middle or inner ear, becoming much more serious and harder to manage...

🐾🐈 An Incredible Feline Comeback Story 🐈 🐾

Meet Yankee‑Rose, an eight‑year‑old Maine C**n with a fighting spirit and an outcome that inspires hope. 💙

Yankee‑Rose presented on 26 March with concerning neurological signs, including uncoordinated walking, weakness on the left side, and subtle changes in her pupils. Despite being bright, alert, and responsive, her clinical signs raised strong suspicion of an intracranial lesion. A full neurological work‑up confirmed the diagnosis: a meningioma.

After a long and emotional discussion, Yankee‑Rose’s family chose to give her a chance.
Without surgery, euthanasia would have been the only remaining option. Fully aware of the risks, including the possibility that she may not survive, they bravely elected to move forward.

On 1 April, Dr Jandré Pretorius performed a right‑sided craniotomy just caudal to the frontal sinus. A 2.5 cm x 3 cm craniotomy window was created, allowing identification and removal of the mass. The tumour was successfully excised as one intact lesion and the surgical site was meticulously reconstructed and closed.

Yankee‑Rose went home on 5 April, had her sutures removed on 16 April, and is now back to her normal self - strong, happy, and thriving.

This case is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved with skilled surgery, dedicated nursing care, and an owner’s unwavering love.

Huge congratulations to Dr Jandré, Sr Bianca, the BVH support team, and Yankee‑Rose’s incredible family. 🐱💪
