CARE C.A.R.E a Registered Independent School for learners presenting with features of Autistic Spectrum

Our programme comprises of a specialised pre-school curriculum with strong emphasis on pre-requisite learning skills and a Centre of Focused Learning curriculum which is adapted from the National Curriculum additionally the curriculum takes a skills-based approach to enable learners to function optimally in their every day environments. Intensive Occupational Therapy, Speech-Language Therapy and Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) are offered at the different developmental levels.

Myth vs Fact: "If you've met one autistic person..."

The saying finishes like this: "...you've met one autistic person." And it is one of the truest things ever said about autism.

The myth is that autistic people are all alike, or that the spectrum is a neat straight line running from "a little bit autistic" to "very autistic." It is not. The spectrum is not a line at all. Think of it more like a sound desk, with dozens of different sliders. Sensory sensitivity, communication style, social energy, focus, routine, anxiety. Every autistic person has their own completely unique mix.

This is exactly why two autistic children can look nothing alike. One might be chatty and love a crowd while finding bright lights unbearable. Another might be quiet and sensory-seeking and thrive on deep routine. Both are autistic. Neither is "more" or "less" autistic than the other.
So we never make assumptions. We get to know the actual child in front of us, because there is no one else quite like them.

If you have met one autistic person, you have met exactly one autistic person.

You may have heard us mention Makaton. So what is it?

Makaton is a way of communicating that uses signs and symbols alongside speech. It gives a child a way to understand and be understood before words come easily, or on the days when words feel tricky. It is not a replacement for talking. It runs alongside it, and for many children it is the bridge that helps spoken words come through.
We use Makaton every day at C.A.R.E., and we would love for you to learn it with us. So we are starting Word of the Week. Every week we will share one useful sign for you to practise at home, taught by our own team.

Here is the magic of it. When everyone signs the same words, at school and at home, no child is ever left out of the conversation.

We came, we competed, we conquered. And we brought home the Cup.
Yesterday our Senior School held their very first Inter-School Sports Day, going head to head with our friends from The Little Forest Centre.

Our learners threw themselves into every event, cheered each other on from the sidelines, made brand new friends, and played their hearts out.
And the grand finale? C.A.R.E. Senior School was crowned champions. That trophy is going straight to pride of place.

A special shout-out to Chaos Coffee, brilliantly represented by our very own Yaqeen, who kept everyone warm and caffeinated through the morning. Top effort.

Days like this are what it is all about. Sport, teamwork, belonging and a whole lot of joy. To The Little Forest Centre, thank you for a wonderful morning of friendly competition. Here is to the first of many.

Progress is not linear.

We would all love progress to look like that neat diagonal line. Up and up, a little more every day, no surprises. But real growth almost never works that way, and for our children least of all.
Real progress wobbles. It leaps forward, then seems to stall. It dips backward right when you thought you had cracked it, then surges again out of nowhere. Those plateaus and backward steps are not failures. They are part of the climb. Often a quiet dip is just a child consolidating before their next big jump.

So this is your reminder to zoom out. Do not measure today against yesterday. Measure it against last term, last year, the very beginning. That is where you see the real story. Every small step, every wobble, every recovery, it all adds up to something big.

Celebrate the small wins. They are not small at all. Every single step counts.

You will always find us where the conversation about autism is happening.

This morning our team came out in Norwood to support the launch of Sujaa, a brand new non-profit stepping into the world with big plans and a good heart. A few of our staff gave up their morning to stand alongside them, because when a new organisation sets out to do good, the least we can do is show up and cheer them on.

We know how much those early days of belief matter, so it was a joy to be there at the very beginning. Welcome to the community, Sujaa. We are rooting for you.

Over the years, the kindest, truest things ever said about C.A.R.E. have not come from us. They have come from our families. So this week, we are handing the microphone to them.

Happy International Self-Care Day.

We talk a lot about looking after our children, and rightly so. But today is a good reminder that wellbeing is a family affair. The healthiest, happiest homes are the ones where everyone gets cared for, grown-ups included. And the secret is not grand gestures. It is small, repeatable habits.

For parents, that might be five quiet minutes with no guilt attached, finally asking for and accepting help, and remembering that rest is productive too. You cannot pour from an empty cup.

For kids, it looks a little different but matters just as much. Daily movement and fresh air, quiet low-demand downtime to recover from a busy world, and gentle practice at naming the big feelings as they come.

None of these take much time or money. They are just tiny, consistent choices that protect everyone's wellbeing, one small habit at a time.

Day two of our Mandela Day mission and this one came with soil under the fingernails.

Our Senior School learners spent the morning at a day care in our neighbourhood, planting real flowers to brighten up the garden. They dug, they planted, they watered. They also coloured in paper flowers to pop in among the real ones, so the garden is now bursting with both.

There is something rather perfect about our learners planting something that will keep growing long after they have gone home. A small act of care, left behind for someone else to enjoy.

Thank you to everyone who donated seedlings, paints and brushes. Look what you helped grow.

Sensory-friendly winter weekends.

Joburg winters are cold, the days are short and the usual run-around plans go out the window. Good news: slow, cosy and low-key is exactly what a busy nervous system loves. Here are five gentle weekend ideas that keep things calm and regulated.

Build a cosy den. Drape blankets over a couple of chairs for a snug, low-light hideaway. Small enclosed spaces feel safe and beautifully calming. Bake something warm. The mixing, pouring and oven smells make it gently sensory, and the treat at the end is a happy bonus.

Make a calming sensory bin. A tub of dry rice or pasta with scoops, cups and a few hidden toys is quiet, contained, tactile play. Cosy up with deep pressure. A film, dimmed lights and a snug blanket wrap. That gentle, all-over pressure helps busy bodies settle. And warm water play, a bath or a basin with cups to pour and squeeze, is soothing and endlessly regulating.

The golden rule? Keep it low-demand and follow their lead. Let the weekend be slow, because slow is just what they need.

Sixty seven minutes.
That is all Madiba asked of us.

Our Senior School learners gave that and then some.
On Mandela Day our learners made and packaged sandwiches, then took them out with flasks of tea and coffee into the parks and streets of Orange Grove and Norwood. They poured, they served, they handed over a warm cup on a cold winter morning.

Here is what we love most about days like this. So often our learners are the ones being helped. On Mandela Day they were the helpers, and you could see what that did for them. Every child has something to give.

To everyone who donated bread, spreads and a bit of time, thank you. You made this possible.
